Virginia Lacrosse Player Charged In Murder Of Women's Team Member

UVa senior George Huguely was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after the death of Yeardley Love, his girlfriend and member of the women's team. Now, Huguely's cameo in the Duke lacrosse case appears all the more poignant.

According to Charlottesville police, they responded early this morning to a report of a possible alcohol overdose at a house just off campus. They found the body of Love, 22, with signs of physical trauma.

Huguely, who was in a relationship with Love, was arrested soon after, charged, and jailed. Details are still emerging, but his quotes in the wake of the Duke lacrosse scandal appear in a whole new light.

As a high school senior, Huguely spoke to the Washington Post at the height of the controversy, after the team had been suspended, but before they were cleared.

I sympathize for the team," Huguely said. "They've been scrutinized so hard and no one knows what has happened yet. In this country, you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I think that's the way it should be."

...

Huguely's father, George, Sr. said yesterday that he's had discussions with his son, who will play at University of Virginia next season, about staying out of situations that could be costly.

"Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it," George Huguely Sr. said. "You always have to remember and can't let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen."
