Kellen Winslow Jr. is basically a deadbeat tenant, according to a lawsuit recently filed by property owners of a luxury home he rented for six months last year in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
Winslow was traded this week from the Bucs to the Seahawks. When he moved out of the $9,000-a-month pad last July, the suit alleges, the place's fancy Persian rugs and carpeting were covered in dog shit and dog piss. Winslow shorted the owners on the final month's rent. He had nearly $3,000 in unpaid utility bills. There were holes in the walls, and cigarette and cigar burns on the outdoor furniture. "Every corner of the home was damaged," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, quoting from the lawsuit. Total damage estimate: $133,000.
Brian Watkins, Winslow's attorney, responded by calling the suit "bogus" and "a shakedown of a professional athlete." He said Winslow's pregnant wife had lived there with her mother and a housekeeper, and that Winslow was hardly ever there. From the Union-Tribune:
Bob Gerard, attorney for the home's owners, said they have pictures to document the damage.
Watkins had an explanation for several of the alleged damages. He said there was a mix-up with the payment of utilities by Winslow's real estate agent, who was supposed to pay for them on Winslow's behalf. He said the holes in the wall were drilled to hang flat-screen TVs. He said the "the dog had an accident on the rug" but that it was cleaned along with the rest of the carpeting.
"They want to portray it as though Kellen Winslow had a fraternity of football friends partying," Watkins said.
Kellen Winslow is a fucking soldier for tenants' rights.
