Female Indian Athlete Accused Of Rape, Having A Penis

Here's a song we've heard before. A female athlete is accused of not being a female. This time, the woman's name is Pinki Pramanik and she is an Indian runner.

Pramanik was arrested Thursday after her partner accused her of rape and of having a penis. She refused a medical exam at a government-run hospital.

"I have undergone numerous tests in my career as an athlete," Pramanik was quoted as saying in Friday's Times of India. "Why should I agree to more ridiculous tests?"

Prabir Roy, the duty officer at the Baguiati police station, told AFP that Pramanik was remanded in custody on rape charges and would appear in court later Friday.

"She was arrested and taken to a government-run hospital, but she refused to sit for a medical test," Roy said. "A woman had lodged a complaint of rape with the police station."

Pramanik had apparently been living with her partner for some time, so one would think that if she had penis, her partner would have known about it.

[H]er partner also accused her of retracting a promise to marry her.

Ah. Her partner has also leveled accusations of bribery. She claims that Pramanik had bribed medical boards to conceal her gender and that she was forced to retire in 2007 for fear of being caught.

Prmanik denies all these allegations and has since agreed to undergo the test she initially refused. A Magistrate has ordered that the test be performed before June 29.
