USC's Marqise Lee Has Shattered The PAC-12 Single-Game Receiving Record [UPDATE]
There have been some great quarterbacks, great receivers and great passing offenses in the history of the Pac-12. Until today, no one had racked up more single-game receiving yards than Oregon State's Mike Hass, who careened for 293 on 12 catches against Boise State in 2004.
Enter USC's Marqise Lee, who had 299 yards before the end of the third quarter against Arizona. The last 57 of those came on a catch-and-run in which he sprinted almost the width of the field precisely an arm's reach and a half away from three defenders.
For some measure of context: 299 yards through three quarters puts him on pace to threaten the FBS record of 405 yards that Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech put up against Nebraska in 1998. (See page 8 of the FBS record book.) We'll update at game's end.
UPDATE: Lee wound up with 16 catches for 345 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, as well as 123 yards on three kick returns. But he's going to remember watching a 48-yard Hail Mary dance off his fingertips as time expired. Arizona shocked everyone not only by beating No. 9 USC 39-36, but by finally winning a close game. Meanwhile, ridiculously, the Wildcats' Austin Hill finished with 259 yards receiving. The teams combined for 1,206 yards, including 862 passing.
