Two Sundays ago, Fox Sports Midwest's Dan McLaughlin was arrested for driving drunk after he crashed into a stop sign in Chesterfield, a suburb of St. Louis. He was suspended from work, even though FSM doesn't carry postseason games so his year was effectively over. That mugshot, on the left, is the face of a man who knows he needs to find a new job. If you haven't already, I urge you to read the John Sterling profile in last Sunday's New York Times. Sterling, for the uninitiated, is the Yankees' godawful radio play-by-play guy—"Thuuuuuuh Yankees win!"—for whom some people have developed an unaccountable hipster taste, like moose antlers. (Back in my ESPN days, I worked with a handful Yankees fans who would crowd around a computer during games, giggling over Sterling's home run calls.) As Bill Pennington's story makes clear in its primly snarky way, Sterling represents a vanishing breed of New Yorker—the old-showbiz cornball who probably thinks culture ended after the third revival of Finian's Rainbow and who now seems to exist in a perpetual 1970s game show of the soul. You probably saw his photo in a New York deli once, somewhere between Rita Rudner and Bob from Sesame Street. More »

Dan Snyder doesn't do many interviews. The reason: When Dan Snyder opens his mouth, he embarrasses himself. The Redskins owner appears comfortable only when speaking in sound bites about how his blood runs "burgundy and gold." So it came as a surprise last week when Snyder sat down with the DC affiliates of FOX and NBC. Snyder was eager to discuss his charitable works. He also wanted to talk about "tabloid" journalists. Most of all, he wanted to be loved. It was shameless PR stagecraft, and it was embarrassing for everyone involved — the asshole being interviewed, the incompetent who no doubt engineered the interviews, and especially the credulous morons conducting the interviews. Awful Announcing has helpfully listed the announcing teams for each NCAA tournament venue, and we were gonna say you gotta feel bad when your game is being broadcast by Craig Bolerjack, but then we see he's doing the Duke game and therefore pass the last-announcing-team award to Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel.
