This is great. On Sept. 15, 1986, Mike Laga, one of those light-hitting Cardinals players whom St. Louis fans are always applauding for moving the runners over, supposedly knocked a foul ball clear out of the old Busch Stadium. Because we have all lost our capacity for wonder, this feat has lately gone in for a bit of Snopesing, but at last the folks at Joe Sports Fan have unearthed video evidence—from an old Mets highlight tape, of all things. I love that Cardinals fans give Laga a standing ovation (even if they probably gave him standing ovations for lining out sharply to second), and I love that not even the presence of Tim McCarver ("Remarkable!") can ruin the moment. It really has been bizarre to watch the reaction to Rick Ankiel's triumphant return to St. Louis as a power-hitting outfielder. We understand that it's an inspiring story — obviously — but it's still odd to see a guy we've been quietly stalking following for seven years now suddenly leading newscasts. Back when we lived in St. Louis, we made the mistake of parking our car before a Rams game in the rooftop garage for the Gateway Arch, which is technically federal property. This was not necessarily a problem until we popped open a beer for a tiny, sad little tailgate. In the first two games at the brand new stadium of the team for which we have directed a considerable amount of our psychic energy over the last 26 years, the home team has been outscored 29-8. When a baseball team is blown out, it is often to referred to as a "football score;" the final tally was so high that one would think a football team had notched it. Allow us to refute this notion. Well, we have to say, we didn't exactly expect our first game at the new Busch Stadium to have the feel of a U.S.-Japan World Cup Softball Game. By the fourth inning of the Cardinals' 15-3 loss to the Braves, we were roaming the park freely, searching for cracks in the woodwork and doing anything possible to avoid looking at what was going on on the field. (We also found this Loge Level sign from the old Busch on sale for $200; if our wave of nostalgia hadn't been extinguished by Jeff Weaver, we'd have bought that darned thing.) He covered St. Louis sports — and, of course, the Cardinals — for 60 years, starting out as the beat reporter for the St. Louis Browns. He wrote more than 20 books about St. Louis and the Cardinals, including the first grownup book we ever read: Bob Broeg's Redbirds: A Century Of Cardinals' Baseball, published in 1981, with a final chapter looking at the "future of the Cardinals," picturing Keith Hernandez and Garry Templeton.
