The Knicks were in Chicago last night to play the Bulls. Both teams acquitted themselves well. The same can't be said for at least one of the fans at the United Center. That would be the soon-to-be-identified little bastard in this video. The video quality is crappy, but it looks like the bastard is hawking beaucoup amounts of phlegm into his palm in advance of slapping hands with Knicks players as they make their way out of the tunnel before the game. Jeremy Lin appears to be the primary target. I can't read the Chinese characters in the YouTube comments but I imagine several of them translate to one comment that I can read: "You bastard, Caucasian dog." More »

In a meeting during the '98 lockout, for example, Jordan the player told Wizards owner Abe Pollin, "If you can't make it work economically, you should sell the team." Brian Scalabrine is one of those NBA players that we all delight in calling a "role player," even if his role was never particularly valuable. In Boston, his role was to occasionally come in to fall on a loose ball and get praised for his hustle, but mostly it was to delight all of the white kids from Southie who thought he could be Irish because of his red hair. Last year in Chicago it was very similar. Scalabrine—who, with apologies to TD Garden's 300 level, actually comes from an Italian family—now role plays in Italy, where he is just another ginger Italian boy who can fall on loose balls every now and then. Last night, the Miami Heat ended the Eastern Conference Finals with a 19-4 run in under four minutes to beat the Chicago Bulls in five games. If you were fortunate or unfortunate enough — I haven't decided which it is for me — to have watched the entire game, then you would have witnessed equal parts masterful comeback and epic collapse. Chicago's Derrick Rose was named the NBA's 2010-11 Most Valuable Player today. He is the youngest MVP in league history. Rose delivered remarks to members of the Chicago media this afternoon; he sounded perhaps nervous and certainly young, because he is. But he was careful to take the time to thank his mother Brenda, who raised him and his three older brothers on her own in Englewood. It was one of those moments that momentarily melted our bitter, cynical hearts, while also helpfully reminding us that Mother's Day is on Sunday and we had better, at the very least, go buy a Hallmark card after work. And then the NBA TV host said, "What a humble superstar!" and made a joke (read: plug) about Kias to close the show, and suddenly we hated everything again. More »

Indiana's veteran forward Jeff Foster told the Indianapolis Star this week that he knows he'll be considered the "villain" after a series of hard fouls against the Bulls in the first round. Dan Shulman and Jon Barry tried their damndest to properly announce the Bulls-Pacers game on Saturday, but Derrick Rose made it a difficult task. We can't really blame them. Rose had 39 points in Chicago's 104-99 win, and his baskets were, throughout, brilliant. Brilliant enough to make Barry giggle in delight through most of his calls. "There's no plays I need to call for the Chicago Bulls," he said, after Rose converted an and-one opportunity to pull the Bulls within two points, 99-97, with just under two minutes to play.
