Record-breaking old man Jamie Moyer, who legend has it is older than dirt, legged out a two-run infield single tonight, becoming the geezeriest ballplayer to ever drive in a run. Pitcher Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Dodgers was 48 years, 11 months, and six days when he hit a three-run double back in 1932, so at least Moyer still has another record to shoot for. (Moyer, incidentally, also won the game tonight by throwing six-and-a-third innings of one-run ball, breaking the previous record for oldest win set by himself a month ago.) More »

In the eighth inning last night, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was standing on the top step of the dugout when he took a foul ball from Dexter Fowler off his left leg. Tulowitzki told the Denver Post the leg went numb and that he thought it might have been broken, but X-rays were negative. Tulowitzki has a deep bruise, and he's going to be day-to-day. Much credit to Colorado's team trainer for providing him with as much instant relief as he could muster. More »

Nobody survives till age 49 in the major leagues without making enemies. Hence Jamie Moyer's dustup with whippersnapper Chipper Jones this weekend. And before that, the middle-aged mushballer talked to Westword for a feature story. In one of the outtakes, he explained that he had come close to signing this year not with the Rockies but with the Baltimore Orioles, for whom he went 25-22 from 1993 to 1995, in what had seemed at the time to be the late middle of his career. Baltimore let Moyer leave as a free agent after 1995, and he went to the Boston Red Sox, then run by Dan Duquette. More »

A 27-year-old man died on Wednesday from injuries sustained in a fall as he was attempting to slide down a railing at Coors Field. Robert Seamans of Pueblo, Colo., was a committed Rockies fan. As a weary nation slept peacefully, the Rockies' Kip Wells struck out Padres' pitcher Glendon Rusch to end the longest game in either team's history; a 22-inning, 2-1 win for Colorado at Petco Park. It all ended at 1:21 a.m. PST — 4:21 on the east coast — 6 hours, 16 minutes after it had begun. By the time it had ended, the seventh-inning stretch seemed miles and years away. In fact, there had also been a 14th-inning stretch and a 21st-inning stretch. Since no one was amused by the prospect of a 28th-inning stretch, or watching Rockies' players shave in the dugout to comply with the team's ban on facial hair, all were relieved when the Padres made two throwing errors and Troy Tulowitzki then doubled to drive in Willy Taveraz in the top of the 22nd. Also the outfield grass had grown to ankle level. My only regret is that ESPN wasn't televising it. More »
