Chicago's Derrick Rose was named the NBA's 2010-11 Most Valuable Player today. He is the youngest MVP in league history. Rose delivered remarks to members of the Chicago media this afternoon; he sounded perhaps nervous and certainly young, because he is. But he was careful to take the time to thank his mother Brenda, who raised him and his three older brothers on her own in Englewood. It was one of those moments that momentarily melted our bitter, cynical hearts, while also helpfully reminding us that Mother's Day is on Sunday and we had better, at the very least, go buy a Hallmark card after work. And then the NBA TV host said, "What a humble superstar!" and made a joke (read: plug) about Kias to close the show, and suddenly we hated everything again. More »

Indiana's veteran forward Jeff Foster told the Indianapolis Star this week that he knows he'll be considered the "villain" after a series of hard fouls against the Bulls in the first round. The video above gives an idea of what he's talking about; he's yoked Derrick Rose a couple times, in Games 1 and 3, and landed an elbow directly in Luol Deng's face in Game 3. The NBA ruled both Game 3 fouls to be "flagrant 1" hits after the fact, and so Foster stayed in the game and will not be suspended unless he picks up more points during whatever remains of the series (Chicago leads 3-1). Dan Shulman and Jon Barry tried their damndest to properly announce the Bulls-Pacers game on Saturday, but Derrick Rose made it a difficult task. We can't really blame them. Rose had 39 points in Chicago's 104-99 win, and his baskets were, throughout, brilliant. Brilliant enough to make Barry giggle in delight through most of his calls. "There's no plays I need to call for the Chicago Bulls," he said, after Rose converted an and-one opportunity to pull the Bulls within two points, 99-97, with just under two minutes to play. The Bulls keep winning — they beat Sacramento by 40 points last night in Chicago — and have earned the franchise's first 50-win season since the 1998 title year. They've been so good not only because their point guard is Derrick Rose, a candidate for the league MVP, but also because their team chemistry is such that someone like Keith Bogans can lead the fast break while Rose swoops down the sideline and springs for an alley-oop like this one. The most impressive replay on this clip is the third shot we see — in full speed from above, Rose's ascent is so rapid that it's a wonder he doesn't careen directly into the backboard.
