Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski earned what was advertised as his 903rd career victory in Madison Square Garden last night, setting a new NCAA record. Odd as it is to imagine the Duke/Coach K publicity machine underselling something, it's worth noting that the 74-69 win over Michigan State could also be counted as Krzyzewski's 907th career victory. He could have celebrated his record-breaking win eight months ago, when the Blue Devils beat Michigan 73-71 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. More »

The PG County mounties who went berserk on a Maryland student celebrating his basketball team's win over Duke last year have been charged with felony assault. Took long enough. This episode made national news and even featured an attempted cover-up, when campus surveillance video of the beating went missing. There's a report out today that says college athletes are underpaid, and you should probably ignore it. Reading a study from the National College Players Association saying that college athletes should get more money is like reading a study from the NCAA saying student-athletes should never be paid and should thank Jesus every day for the honor of wearing the logo of a large State School for 3-to-4 years. The Duke University men's basketball team has earned a special privilege in college sports and within March Madness: It will never be considered the underdog. As far as we're concerned, for as long as Coach K is patrolling the sideline and as long as his hair stays a surreal jet-black, Duke will exist solely to be on the wrong side of an upset. We watch them to watch them lose and we hope they will look sad while doing so.
