Martin St. Louis's mother died unexpectedly on Thursday. After flying home and speaking with his family, he decided his mom would have wanted him to play in Game 5. But Game 6 promised the full emotional wringer, and with his father and sister in the stands, on Mother's Day, St. Louis scored the game's first goal.
Above is an AP photo of St. Louis the moment after putting home a rebound, and there's more on his face than just your typical post-goal joy. St. Louis was named the game's first star, but he wanted to share everything with his teammates. The Rangers have a tradition called the Broadway Hat, which functions as sort of an in-house game MVP. Since St. Louis was awarded it on Friday, it was up to him to pass it on last night. He chose to give it to the entire team.
"You guys have been nothing but unbelievable for me these past couple days and I'll never forget that," St. Louis said. "I couldn't be prouder to be a fucking New York Ranger with you guys. Thank you very much."
