Every now and then you run across a photo so distinct it reminds you that when photographers cover an event such as, say, the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship, they like writers can grow weary of saying the same thing first once and then again, on repeat, on and on.


So here are the feet and silhouette of John Isner, an American, serving against defending champion Juan Monaco, of Spain. Isner won, advancing to the finals against Nicolas Almagro. The AP photo by Eric Gay gives an unexpected sense of Dark Link perspective to Houston at midday and brings a smidgen of inky abstraction to what could've been just another repetitive round of jumbo non-beer pong.
