It's hard to top the New Palestine-Triton Central rivalry in Indiana high school hoops but Boomer, the Indiana Pacers mascot, just upped the ante. Jerrbryon Graves, a senior at Metropolitan High School in Indianapolis, hit this game-winning shot from behind half court on Saturday to win the regional finals, 64-61. It wasn't even a heave. Apparently, Graves takes these shots in practice all the time — which is only the kind of thing a coach hates until the kid makes one in a game. This is hard to comprehend as real but several real media outlets are reporting it as true: Wes Leonard, a 16-year-old player on the Fennville High School basketball team in western Michigan, died after scoring the winning layup in Fennville's victory over Bridgman on Thursday to end his team's perfect 20-0 season. Leonard collapsed moment later and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. More »

Last night, West Virginia upset No. 16 UConn in Morgantown, 65-56. Alex Oriakhi went to the line with the game tied and just a few minutes remaining the first half, and he took what was mostly a nice-looking free throw, especially for a big man. But the ball bounced around the rim a few times before resting, almost naturally, on the small rectangle of space behind the rim. And it stayed there. The unusual incident has already led to some philosophical analysis using, crucially, an episode from "The Adventures of Pete & Pete"; we thought we'd add to the dialogue by compiling video of some of the strangest basketball shots on the net. Alex Etherington, a 6'5" small forward at Hamilton Heights High School in Indiana, had an open look at the basket just minutes into a game against Peru High on Saturday. The score was just 2-0, but a Peru player still attempted to stop Etherington's dunk attempt with a vicious undercut push from behind. Etherington, whose brother Austin will play for Indiana next year, hit his head hard on the floor and was eventually taken off the court in a stretcher. He spent the night in a Fort Wayne hospital and was diagnosed with a "serious" concussion. He also suffered bleeding on the frontal lobe of his brain and had temporary paralysis immediately after the fall. The sophomore will not play for the remainder of the season. More »

Before Kobe Bryant was a five-time NBA champion with a shoe contract and a short film, he was just a regular high school kid who was documented by famous sports photographers on his way to class and who brought R&B stars to the prom. To remind us of that fact, someone from his alma mater, Lower Merion High School, dug up this old highlight reel from the Aces' 1996 Pennsylvania state championship run. Kobe looks, of course, dominant over his peers — at the 3:50 mark, he dribbles the length of the court and through the entire opposing team for a dunk that sealed an overtime win. There's commentary and muzack from an electric keyboard demo tape here, and it all spills into a Hoosiers-esque montage with a "One Shining Moment" remix at the end.
