From Milan, one of the world's fashion capitals, to Dagestan: the land of the mountains. Inter Milan's Dejan Stankovic scored a goal just 20 seconds into a Champions League game against Schalke last night in Milan. More accurately, Stankovic fluidly picked the ball out of the air from midfield and sent it searing past Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with one touch. From fifty meters out. Inter lost this one, 5-2, and continues its fall from the top of the Champions League — but as Rob Hughes points out, those at San Siro last night were still treated to one of the most memorable and graceful goals in the stadium's 85-year history. An animator named Richard Swarbrick made this tribute to Tottenham's Gareth Bale, the 21 year-old star of Spurs. The video uses Bale's highlights from two matches against Inter Milan this season — the first, a 4-3 loss on October 20 in which Bale scored a hat trick in the second half, and the second a 3-1 win on November 2 that featured two Bale assists. Swarbrick said on his Twitter account that drawing every frame took him about 35 hours of work. If it wasn't so labor-intensive, I'd propose watching soccer highlights only in this form. More »
