Former ball boy Bobby Davis and his stepbrother Mike Lang have filed suit in New York's State Supreme Court, but the man who allegedly molested them as teenagers isn't named. On Nov. 17, ESPN reported that two men had accused Bernie Fine, 65, an assistant basketball coach at Syracuse since 1976, of molesting them when they were children. Fine denied the allegations, and Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim angrily came to Fine's defense. Since then, another man went to Syracuse police to say he, too, had been abused by Fine. And both ESPN and the Syracuse Post-Standard have published stories about a recorded phone call from 2002 in which Fine's wife, Laurie, admits to one of Fine's alleged victims that she was aware of what her husband had done. That revelation led Syracuse to fire Fine, but it also raised questions about who knew what when with regard to Fine's actions. Bernie Fine has been "terminated, effective immediately" according to a statement released by Kevin Quinn, the senior vice president for public affairs at Syracuse University. The decision comes in the wake of new allegations surfacing against Fine as well as ESPN's report that Bernie Fine's wife, Laurie Fine, had admitted she was aware of her husband's actions. In the type of game that gets us so freaking excited for the tournament next week we almost wet ourselves, Syracuse pretty much just clinched a NCAA tournament big by beating No. 1 Connecticut 86-84. The key, not surprisingly, was guard Gerry McNamara, who had 13 assists and hit a huge 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. More »
