There's another important American anniversary to celebrate this week, and one that we should all be congratulated for enduring together: a year ago this Friday, July 8, LeBron James settled into a director's chair at a Greenwich Boys & Girls Club and told Jim Gray about biting his fingernails. He also announced that he would take his talents to South Beach for the 2010-2011 season. More »

There's a brief section about The Decision in Those Guys Have All the Fun, and if the details aren't exactly fresh, the takeaway is somewhat new: Everyone involved was using everyone else for their own ends to produce what amounted to a massive orgy that they all came to regret the next day. And LeBron was just the inflatable fuck toy in the middle of it all. So to speak. More »

USA Today reports that Jim Gray, infomercial host and occasional sports commentator, has been pulled from Golf Channel's broadcast of this week's Northern Trust Open. On Thursday, Gray took part in a profanity-laden screaming match with Bobby Brown, Dustin Johnson's caddy, after Johnson nearly missed his tee time and took a two-stroke penalty. More »

Interesting Tweet this week from Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch wondering whether Jim Gray earned a half-million dollars when LeBron James told everybody where he'd be taking his talents. This probably can't be stated as fact until He says it's so during ESPN's upcoming "Real-Estate Decision" extravaganza. True story: Way back in 1998, when we were a wee lad logging agate text at The Sporting News, one of the magazine staffers sent a company-wide email after Jim Gray's famous Pete Rose interview demanding that all writers sign a petition saying that Gray should be fired. We found this a bit extreme, and said so, in a "reply all" message that went to the whole company. We were 22 years old. We didn't understand office politics too well. We still don't. More »

Generally speaking, we think it's silly for online writers — who are the only ones free from the PR/press pass/everybody-play-nice circle jerk of commercialized athletics — to salivate over press passes as if they had, at last, been invited to the ball. But we will make an exception when the folks from Free Darko sit courtside for the United States-Puerto Rico international game. More »

ESPN/HBO/NBC/Basement Somewhere In New Jersey's Jim Gray has come up for air enough to report that Ron Artest has accepted the trade to the Sacramento Kings. We wish the city of Sacramento all kinds of luck; have fun, you crazy kids. There has to be some sort of Schwarzenegger angle here, doesn't there? More »

We say this with trepidation, because we've always kind of suspected, deep down, the guy was more complex than people thought, but it's time to part the cards on the table here: It's possible Ron Artest is just a dick. More »
