The massive, ever-changing mural "Inspiration," located near the student book store in downtown State College, has a new addition today: a halo appearing above the head of grandfatherly Joe Paterno. This is the same mural that was altered by its artist to remove Jerry Sandusky after the sex abuse scandal broke. If the landmark artwork can be said to reflect the Penn State community's thoughts and feelings, it's quite telling that Paterno is a saint and Sandusky doesn't exist. More »

Never mind the alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky's child sex abuse: Joe Paterno is the biggest victim of all. At least that seems to be the opinion of those deluded Penn Staters who continue to make Paterno their primary concern. And arguably no one has tilted more stupidly at that stupid windmill than Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris. Just after Paterno was axed, Harris rushed to his defense and even gave up his job. He then drove for three-plus hours that same day to give somebody a piece of his mind, only to do little more than eat a sticky bun. And today, after a meeting at which Penn State's Board of Trustees announced a change in leadership, Harris held a press conference of his own. The last place any sane person wanted to be this past Friday night was the Marriott hotel in Manhattan's financial district. The hotel's grand ballroom would be a good setting for a bad prom, complete with an ugly red carpet and garish inverted-pyramid chandeliers. Curley, Penn State's on-leave athletic director, and Schultz, the school's former senior vice president for business and finance, are both charged with perjury and failure to report abuse. In September of 2007, Vicky Triponey resigned as Penn State's vice president for student affairs, a job that included overseeing the school's Office of Judicial Affairs. In an interview two weeks later, she attributed her departure to what the Centre County Daily Times described as "philosophical differences with other leadership in student affairs and at the university in general," but she declined to elaborate. Her resignation coincided with the imposition of new rules that largely removed her office's ability to suspend athletes from playing—rules produced by an advisory committee with input from Joe Paterno. As reported earlier today, Harris's dedication to Penn State's morally complicit former coach is so great he made a show of sacrificing his own noble calling as a casino spokesman, hopped in a car with his wife, and drove all the way from Pittsburgh to State College.
