Earlier this week, an e-mail from John Kaye showed up in my inbox. I didn't know Kaye but soon learned that he'd written the 1980 film Where the Buffalo Roam, the ancestor to the Hunter S. Thompson movies of recent years. Kaye had just published a lengthy piece in the Los Angeles Review of Books entitled "Love, Boxing, and Hunter S. Thompson." He wanted me to take a look. On March 8, 1971, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought in what was billed as the "Fight of the Century" at Madison Square Garden. LIFE has put together a gallery of photos taken by a 24 year-old staff photographer named John Shearer 40 years ago; the majority of his photos were never published until now. There's a look at Joe Frazier and his R&B group, "The Knockouts," as well as this shot of Ali sparring at a Miami grocery store a few weeks before the fight. The big event on ESPN this weekend is "Ali Rap," a documentary hosted by Chuck D that posits the theory that Muhammad Ali was the originator of what we think of today as "hip-hop." (That's the other half of the music they did on the "Judgment Night" soundtrack, if you're confused, rockers.) It's a flimsy argument at best — as Chuck Klosterman points out in an excellent essay on ESPN, simultaneously promoting and undermining the whole program — but we didn't think it veered toward the offensive.
