Today's <em>New York Times</em> <a href="http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/21/yale-football-coach-resigns/?ref=sports">writes up the resignation</a> of Yale football coach Tom Williams, caught in a resume-padding scandal after he claimed to have been a former Rhodes Scholarship finalist. A two-bylined investigation by the <em>Times</em> in November, as Yale quarterback Patrick Witt was <a href="http://deadspin.com/5860899/cecil-rhodes-would-have-given-yales-quarterback-a-scholarship-for-telling-the-pencil+necks-who-run-the-rhodes-scholarship-to-get-lost">dropping out of the Rhodes process</a> so he wouldn't miss the Harvard game, found no evidence that Williams had applied for a Rhodes at all. That prompted an internal inquiry at Yale, which led to Williams stepping down. <a href="http://deadspin.com/5870632/new-york-times-college-football-is-in-crisis-what-with-the-resume-padding-and-child-rape-and-things-like-that" title="Click here to read more about New York Times: College Football Is In Crisis, What With The Resume Padding And Child Rape And Things Like That">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Other than the fact that Upmarket Jeff Foxworthy somehow believes there was once a time of chivalric amateurism, and other than the part where he relishes the supposed irony of lefties advocating capitalism-friendly reform (Saul Alinsky and Marvin Miller would like a word) and also the part where he writes, "College basketball is more thrilling than pro basketball because the game is still animated by amateur passions, not coldly calculating professional interests"&mdash;other than all that,<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/opinion/the-amateur-ideal.html?_r=1&ref=opinion"> this column</a> is not wholly stupid. Turns out, being a 6-foot-10 center was more important than having a full left arm for <a class="autolink" title="Click here to read more posts tagged KEVIN LAUE" title="Click here to read more posts tagged KEVIN LAUE" href="http://deadspin.com/tag/kevin-laue/">Kevin Laue</a>, the subject of a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/27/sports/ncaabasketball/27forkunion.html?_r=1">New York Times profile</a> and the recent recipient of a scholarship to play basketball for Manhattan College. How did Manhattan's coaches discover Laue? The Times' story, naturally. Sigh. Columbia's <a href="http://www.nyrm.org/">New York Review of Magazines</a> has a lengthy look at the "the short, happy, tragic life" of <em>Play</em>, the Times' <a href="http://img.timeinc.net/time/daily/2008/0811/obama_sunday_1102.jpg">much-beloved</a> sports magazine and, for my money, sportswriting's last good shot. <a href="http://deadspin.com/5259926/a-sad-postmortem-on-nyts-play-magazine" title="Click here to read more about A Sad Postmortem On NYT's Play Magazine">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

You might remember, back in March, when we wrote <a href="http://deadspin.com/sports/college-basketball/we-dont-have-to-use-mr-on-second-reference-244192.php">a daily column for NYTimes.com</a> about the NCAA basketball tournament. Those columns ran back when they had TimesSelect over there, so you had to pay for them. Everything's free over there now, which means not only can you <A href="http://outofbounds.blogs.nytimes.com/">read the old ones</A>, you can read our <a href="http://fairandfoul.blogs.nytimes.com/">brand new one</A>, which starts today. It's called <B><a href="http://fairandfoul.blogs.nytimes.com/">Fair And Foul</a></B>. <a href="http://deadspin.com/307114/another-morning-times-column--and-its-free-this-time" title="Click here to read more about Another Morning Times Column ...
