Perhaps referees can't be bothered to care when two last-place teams go at it. That's the only possible explanation for the lack of a call on Anaheim's Corey Perry for tripping up Carolina's Jussi Jokinen. It wasn't away from the puck, or in a cloud of bodies, but right out there in the open where everyone and their mother but not referee Tim Peel could see. On March 22, 1989, Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk had his neck slashed by an opponent's skate, slicing open his carotid artery and bringing him within minutes of his own death. In 2008, Malarchuk, who has a long history of depression, shot himself in the head while in his Nevada barn, an incident that local authorities declared "accidental under suspicious circumstances." Everyone agrees that the Staples Center clock stopped in the dwindling seconds, giving the Kings just enough time to score the game-winner over the poor Blue Jackets, who never win anything. What's still a matter of debate is whether the clock was right to do so, possibly adjusting itself to make up for an earlier inaccuracy. Sidney Crosby suffered a neck injury, we were told. It was supposedly separate from his concussion issues, and announced by someone with the ominous title of neurological spine specialist, but we were reassured that it was fully healed. Nothing about that terse Penguins release was reassuring. Crosby has been more or less concussed for 13 months, and it's okay to start fearing the worst.
