Last night, Muffet McGraw earned her first career win over Pat Summitt. The Notre Dame women had lost 20 straight games to the Tennessee Volunteers before McGraw's squad — led by its phenomenal sophomore guard, Skylar Diggins — defeated the No. 1 Vols 73-59 in Dayton last night. This was a bittersweet moment for women's college hoops: With it, we lose out on what would have been the first UConn-Tennessee/Geno-Pat matchup in over four years, but at the same time we're treated to a rare moment of mild parity on the distaff side. A No. 2 seed actually defeated a No. 1 seed to reach the Final Four, and in the women's game that's pretty close to a No. 11 seed beating a No. 1 seed to reach the Final Four. At its first spring practice on Wednesday, the Fighting Irish coaching staff introduced the "HelmetCam," a tiny camera that attaches to a player's helmet — Notre Dame used it opposite potential starting quarterback Dayne Crist's throwing arm — and records his every glance and decision. Much like a brain, the HelmetCam does not have the stability to survive recurring hard hits to the head, so it probably won't find its way into the school's NBC contract for game days, but it will provide the coaching staff with special insight into where their quarterbacks look on a given play. It's a great idea for QB training and play development so far in advance of the regular season — and it should add new pressure to the four players vying to start behind center for the Irish. More »

Even though his formal meeting with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbick isn't scheduled until December 8, the leaked reports coming out of South Bend say that head coach Charlie Weis will miraculously return for 2009. Weis, 28-21 in his four years at Notre Dame, ended the 2008 season in predictable fashion last Saturday when USC dutifully thrashed the Irish 38-3. Charlie Weis got Theismen'd yesterday during the Notre Dame v. Michigan game. Did the fact that he was standing on the sidelines and not actually on the field make the rotund coach feel any more embarrassed? Heck no!
