This article focuses on all the wrong aspects. Men aren't not watching because of homophobia or a gender-related reason, or because they can't dunk.
The WNBA is an inferior product.
Girls' high-school basketball (forgive the term) is very popular with all kinds of fans, so to say there's some kind of homophobia or gender-related reason for the WNBA's lack of success would be ridiculous. If all guys are so afraid of women, why aren't all guys so afraid of women? The fact is that in many programs, there is not a huge difference between the quality of girls' and boys' sports, so area men, women and children will watch and enjoy.
The quality difference grows as you go into higher levels and the best the sport has to offer take the stage; that part has to be obvious to any basketball fan. Nevermind the dunking (I'm an Allen Iverson fan, trust me, layups can be very sexy), nearly every women's basketball game I have witnessed (and I watch a lot, actually) has low scoring, terrible defense, few three pointers, and horrid teamwork (watching them fight amongst their own team for rebounds, constantly, is quite painful). Sure there's the occasional great play, game, or even team (I was a huge fan of Ruth Riley and Notre Dame's championship run) but nothing they do, broadly, is even close to the quality of decent men's teams.
The Arena Football League is having similar issues; at the moment, I think it is officially folded, but trying to make a comeback. Did men not watch the AFL because there were guys on the field, or gays in the stands, or because there weren't enough flea-flickers? No, they watched because a better product (the NFL) was available to them. Keep your eyes open, because the UFL will do the same thing.
Sports that have an audience and have a better product will rise and create profit for themselves; we saw the X-Games and extreme sports cement their place with a hungry youth market, and we're watching MMA overtake boxing as we speak. It takes time and a lot of growing pains, but it can happen; correction, it can happen, IF you have the correct product. The WNBA does not.
Qualify why the WNBA is, or is perceived, as worse all you want; that part is open to debate and any discussion about here it from someone with a penis will be cause for banning (as if this post here isn't). But I cannot picture how you can honestly say that the WNBA is a good product being consciously ignored by an obviously homophobic or women-hating male population, when its. just. bad. basketball. #wnba
@ToobularBoobularJoy: This comment shows such a glorious lack of knowledge about Philadelphia that I've decided you have to actually be from Philadelphia and doing this on purpose. That makes your comment the funniest comment on the site today. #mediameltdowns
@Shakey: Are they trying to kill off humor/ grammar/ economy of words because Moe still can't figure it out?
Also, all my hashtags disappear. I guess all you beautiful people with the stars get to have fun with that; I'll sit out in the cold, watching... waiting... drinking... heavily. #mediameltdowns
@SavetoFavorites: I'm not trying to pull rank just because I live closer; I'm unfamiliar with PSU's inner workings and won't claim otherwise. I'm looking at the same facts you are.
I don't know the ins and outs of every case, and won't proclaim to. So if 46 charges were filed and dropped or found not guilty, I can't possibly draw any kind of inference from that. Any lawyer can tell you that for as much as you need to rely on precedent and such, each case is special and highly individual. Trends don't really work like that in criminal law.
I'm not trying to be a dick to you personally or anything, just making my point, but are we really so worried about defending college students' behavior? Do you really believe that the only crimes being committed in State College are by the townies? Shit, have you even been reading Failgate?

Same thing with actors. Guys like John Wayne, or Gregory Peck, with those glorious scotch-and-Lucky Strike voices; they gone, all gone. We live in a world where Tom Cruise's excitable squeak is somehow famous.
It is sad.

@SavetoFavorites: Imagine that, a law enforcement person interested in enforcing the law.
After all, everyone knows that there are never any crimes committed at Penn State, the number 1 party school in America! #pennstatenittanylions
It will be interesting to see who the students side with after this. Some (not even "many") at Penn State have been on Scott's side, or more specifically, so dead-set on being against the "Super-Con" DA Madeira that they ended up on Scott's side. We'll see how eager they are to defend Scott after the school announces how high their tuitions will be after Karoly rakes them for millions of dollars. #pennstatenittanylions
