For most parents with young children, the point of life insurance is to replace income of one earner and ensure there is enough money for education expense. A 20 year term policy meets those needs.
For most people without children or dependents, the point of life insurance is as an estate planning strategy (or they may not need insurance at all). In that case, you almost always want a permanent insurance solution.
I agree that most people should not view insurance primarily as an investment vehicle. It should be viewed as a solution to a specific financial planning problem.
