I once bought two copies of MS Office 2008 from the University Village Apple Store in Seattle - each one appeared sealed and came from Apple's back room - and found they each were packaged with toilet paper and rocks, but no software. They let me return them and didn't give me a hassle, but I think that is only because I am a business customer of theirs who is in every 2-3 weeks.
Running into 3002 errors when trying to update a few 3G's :-(
@Brian Lam: He's right. It would be pretty interesting to see what the best things are for cheap, cheap, cheap. Like is it better to buy a two year old MacBook or a brand new netbook? A generation or two old dSLR or a new point and shoot? How to be frugal and still have the gadgets you want...
@Xeno: Consumer reports just made that list - Kindle won easily. iPad wasn't on the list, but they had a corner article saying if you don't mind sacrificing e-ink for LCD, you'd be well served getting an iPad.
@redman042: 200. It's pretty fortunate that. Otherwise, it would be a stupid idea.
Why not a giant version of Kamens water purifier? [www.wired.com]
@tensai: If I were in San Fran of NYC, I wouldn't be with them (or would invest in some microcells to boost reception). In Seattle, they aren't that bad.
@rodriguesk: They were actually really nice, but I am using the Premier access, so they may be a little better trained than the regular consumer channels. I did get a call from them this morning - before I had even woken up - to finalize my order from yesterday :-/
@mricyfire: As an FYI, I ordered three at the $399 early upgrade price, over the phone, with AT&T, on June 15.
@djdare: Such a huge shock that you are catholic ;-)

I totally know the freedom that a financial buffer feels like - it was a couple years ago when I made my last cc bill payment and broke away from the debt which had been lurking with me since college. Not that I have a whopping great savings now, but I'm no longer paycheck to paycheck...for the moment!

You could always get one, jailbreak it and then cancel service - I think $199 + the broken contract fee is still less than the $699 it goes for sans contract - then you could just go month to month without a data plan (use your pay as you go SIM card, cut down to fit, and only do data in WiFi areas).
@Joe Stoner: Yeah, but really? AT&T couldn't predict this at all? How much hype has there been? Maybe AT&T just doesn't watch the news.
I got a call at 6.45am PST this morning from the Premier offline team. After ordering yesterday, they weren't able to fully complete the process and handed it to the offline team. All they needed this morning was my cc#, then the order was placed. I was assured it would ship out by June 24. We'll see....
@Magic Beans - licks a pug: Until the iTunes activation servers fail....
@djdare: First off, as someone who was all into Apple in the 80's as well, I am really, really sorry your shitty ex caused you not to get the original iPhone. Second, I'm glad you even stopped to think twice about the new iPhone because of the Foxconn issues - I didn't, but probably should have. And yes, giving the money to charity would be champion of you. But...it sounds like you would really enjoy it, and would give you a smile here and there. The fact that you thought twice because of moral issues is more than most people, and admirable, but I think you deserve one after all this time and shouldn't feel guilty about it! You've worked hard, been through a lot...splurge. Suck that you weren't grandfathered in to the old data plan. Maybe on your next rung you can give some to charity?
I really can't hold Apple to blame on this one at all. Seems to be an AT&T issue entirely. We'll watch how other carriers across the globe fair.
@venc: That isn't counting the paper ones. They are sold out of any electronic orders placed - the people with paper orders? Screwed.
