@chicago1: yes, it's called depth of focus, my point wasn't really about "how is it done" but that it's a particularly messed up choice to have clarity to her face, mid-section of the scarf, and right hand... my overall point that this was a total puff shot to accompany the inarguable puff text, more appropriate to US Weekly than an actual reputable newspaper. [yes, I am laughing as i write "reputable"]. bottom line: she's not anywhere that hot, look at the action shots again...
That NYT photo has been played with--how is it that her right hand is in-focus and her left out-of-of-focus...I'm making the call that she isn't nearly has hot without the studio work...
