Ring Lardner should be your go to guy for your early 20th century sportswriting. Read "You Know Me, Al"... one of the great sports novels, and I'd say Great American Novels of all time. Holds up better than almost anything else written in the 1910s.

Berry needs to learn what a replacement player is, since Gil was obviously much better than a replacement player. A pitcher that eats plenty of innings with a 99 / 100 ERA+ has tons of value in the majors.
