Today's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals before an announced crowd of 12,520 at PNC Park was No. 82 on the season for The Pittsburgh Baseball Club, thus extending the longest streak of consecutive losing seasons in the history of North American sports. James McDonald had quite a game last night. Pitched seven innings for the first time this season. Rapped a bases-clearing double. Scored a run. And when he finished retiring the Cubs in order in the seventh, as the above video shows, he had himself a grand ol' time. The Pirates had (cough) been in contention (cough) in the NL Central for much of this season in part because of their bullpen, and McDonald was exiting with a two-run lead. But these are the Pirates. They lost. They're now two games under .500. They've gone from tied for first to seven games back in exactly 10 days, and they were just swept in four games at home by the Cubs. All jesting aside, McDonald had every reason to celebrate: It's now officially football season in Pittsburgh. More »

Yesterday morning, while boarding the R train at Union Square, I was surprised to find myself standing next to a young woman wearing a gray Pirates T-shirt that bore Pedro Alvarez's name and number on the back. This being New York City, it's almost never unusual to encounter sports fans from all over the country, if not the world. But those who identify with Pittsburgh tend to show their allegiance, nearly without fail, to the Steelers, Penguins or even Pitt or Penn State, at least based on their wardrobe selections. Pirates fans have mainly been a dormant lot, known largely for their apathy or their willingness to laugh right along as the franchise has flailed about with miserable consistency in these last two decades.
