Jeff Halstead is the chief of police in Fort Worth, Texas. Last year, in the run-up to Super Bowl XLV in nearby Arlington, Halstead says Ben Roethlisberger promised his department a grant for a police dog on behalf of Roethlisberger's foundation. That grant never came. So Halstead wrote a letter saying Fort Worth cops were "saddened and very disappointed to hear the news that we were not awarded a Ben Roethlisberger Foundation grant." That letter somehow ended up in the hands of a Fort Worth television station, which went ahead and ran with what looked like the story of a rich pro athlete reneging on a promise made to the local community. That it involves Ben Roethlisberger, who's maybe done a few bad things in his day, made it look that much worse. Which is how the narrative went until the very end of the report, anyway. More »

Hines Ward built his entire NFL career in Pittsburgh, which ended this afternoon with his official release, by overcoming perceived slights. Drafted out of Georgia in the third round in 1998, he spent most of his rookie season on special teams, only to watch as the franchise picked Troy Edwards in the first round the following year. Ward would start 14 games in '99, catching 61 passes, but the team selected another wideout with its top pick, taking Plaxico Burress eighth overall in 2000. Edwards would be gone after the 2001 season, and Burress would depart four years after that. Too small and too slow, Ward remained, and together he and the Steelers flourished. More »

It's been nearly two weeks since the Steelers hired Todd Haley to be Big Ben's wingman offensive coordinator, but thus far the only talk of their new working relationship is that there's been no talk. Haley struck all the right notes at his introductory press conference Feb. 9, but he and Roethlisberger have still not had so much as an introductory conversation, and this seems to have Big Ben rattled. Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh's veteran starting safety without all the long hair, has the sickle-cell trait. It's a condition that impacts his blood when he exerts himself in the high altitude. Clark lost 30 pounds and nearly died when the Steelers played at Denver in 2007, after which doctors had to remove his spleen and gall bladder, which caused him to miss the final 10 games of the regular season, plus a playoff loss.
