We've been dipping into the Bill Simmons archive, a salvaged cache of the Sports Guy's old columns from AOL Digital Cities, none of which survives online. Today's jaunt down memory lane is a field trip Simmons took to Bristol in 1997, under the auspices of his friend Gus Ramsey, a SportsCenter producer. It was an uneventful August day, with one minor news story and few highlights, and it's a fascinating look at how SportsCenter is assembled when nothing really happened in the sports world. The last time ESPN tried the stunt of dedicating an entire hour of SportsCenter to Tim Tebow, they managed a paltry 88 mentions of his name. The WWL went above and beyond in its 11 a.m. Eastern show, nearly doubling the instances in which they aired the Denver quarterback's name. Robert Griffin III's nickname is RG3 because he's the third consecutive Robert Griffin in his family—hence the III. While this has been a problem for ESPN before, it's never created so many issues as it did for Linda Cohn tonight on SportsCenter, who despite dropping several "RG3" references continued to call the Heisman Trophy winner "Robert Griffin Jr." We imagine the Baylor quarterback—who announced plans to enter the NFL draft Tuesday—would reply with a smile and a "Please, Linda, call me RG3. We're generally fans of Linda Cohn, but last night's 11pm SportsCenter was bizarre. It started with a cold open featuring Cohn lamenting the onset of some kind of holiday-related depression, then continued to the above segment in which she seems genuinely surprised to be interviewing the New York Rangers' Derek Stepan. She alludes to some kind of past between the two—and she's confessed to being a Rangers fan on-air before—but Cohn is reduced to schoolgirl giggles for most of the interview so we don't get a lot of details. (Because you're already asking, Cohn is 52 and Stepan is 21.) More »
