ESPN is dedicating nearly all of their resources today to finally giving some publicity to little-known basketball personalities Mike Krzyzewski and J.J. Redick. You've probably never heard of them, but I think this attention is long overdue. Why has ESPN ignored them for so long? This little basketball program they call "Duke" is on the rise. Mark my words.
Here's what the Worldwide Leader has planned for the day:
• The actual game is on ESPN
• ESPN2 will broadcast the "Above the Rim" view for the entire game
• ESPNU will broadcast Cameron Crazy Cam, cameras both in and on the fans at the game
• College Gameday was live from Krzyzewskiville
• ESPN.com will have live chats and polls during the game
• ESPN 360 will broadcast the game with extra stats
• ESPN Classic is playing old Duke/UNC games all day long
• ESPN mobile is providing live alerts and updates for all 7 of their customers
And I believe ESPN News will have a camera focused exclusively on Dick Vitale's crotch so you can expeience his erection each time Duke scores on UNC.
I don't think "overkill" is a strong enough word for this. But if you stay here with me on Deadspin, I promise I won't mention it again until "To Watch Tonight."

And the funniest part is that because of this, those of us in ACC country will have all 15 ESPN channels blacked out, while we watch JP Sports with Billy Packer (who is bad, but infintely preferrable to Vitale).
my personal crotch cam is currently showing me wetting my pants from laughing. does all this mean espn will be shortchanging the St. Peter's vs Siena showdown today?
ESPNU will broadcast Cameron Crazy Cam, cameras both in and on the fans at the game And they'll also debut the "Ogre Cam," with shots of Donald Gibb drinking out of an All-Sports Champion cup and screaming "NERRRRRRRRRRDS!!!!" at the top of his lungs.
apparently nobody else plays sports in the world. ever. just unc and duke. that's the only thing that exists.
Oh, I'm sorry--is it not college basketball season? Isn't it the end of the regular season? Isn't this Duke/UNC, a huge rivalry? Doesn't ESPN have a TV deal with the ACC? Stop whining and check it out. Or, if you prefer, check out one of the other 284 channels on your cable. You don't HAVE to watch it, you know.
"NERRRRRRRRRDDDDDD"!!!! I saw William first.
Hey William, are those claws retractable? Usually I have to watch Bravo for bitchiness like that.
Looking forward to sweet release that death will bring.
You watch Bravo? That's interesting. Yeah, they're retractable, and they went right back in after I clicked "Post Comment" on that earlier post. If it's wrong to want to hang on to all that is college basketball before it's gone for the year and replaced by thrice-daily sightings (at least) of a half-dead Peter Gammons, so be it. Don't get me wrong--I like baseball just as much as the next guy. But, I'd rather watch ESPN's coverage of college basketball as much as I can before Baseball Tonight starts airing five times a day.
Concur, Bill. But my declared online nemeses are all who take funny posts too seriously. So let's just call it detente and move on. p.s. I work at a TV marketing research agency; I don't get to choose what I watch.
Captain--ouch. I'd probably go crazy if I couldn't choose what I watched. Unless the money was good. Is the money good? Are you hiring? BTW, I thought all of the posts were funny, sans Fred's.
Oh my god, you were being serious about the above the rim camera on its own channel. Wow, I thought you were being sarcastic. SPeechless.
By the way, I'm not really a Duke hater. I dislike them and coach K, but I'm not rabid. After 5 minutes of Vitale, I'm now a rabid Duke hater. And I'm not that excited about UNC either. I can't even watch when he's talking. I'm going to a bar to watch this where hopefully there will be music on or something.
Really, no one wins when Duke-UNC play. I hate both teams and coaches equally so it's not like I'm rooting for anyone in particular. I think the only way I could get excited is if there was a steel cage tag team match between Redick-Williams-Coach K vs Hansbrough-Noel-Williams to the death. Winner gets the rights to beat on Vitale.
Hey, I'm a huge Duke fan, and Vitale almost makes me not like them. I'm watching the game with the wife, who is not basketball crazy like I am, and she heard Vitale spew "DIAPER DANDY!!" and she said, "Did he just say 'diaper dandy'? That's stupid." Such a great wife! UNC would win that cage match in a walk. Noel could probably take all three of them on his own. Actually, they'd probably decide not to fight each other at all and team up on Vitale.
You know what this game needs? A fight.
And you know what *I* need? ESPNU, so I can see the Crazies crying. :)
Okay, one more post before I get a life: it seems pretty obvious that ESPN has a lot of bias for Duke, and that's not right. A BIG part of that problem is Vitale. I mean, hugely big. At least he gave props to Tyler Hansbrough (who was so scary good tonight he might just drive UNC to a 3 seed, ACC tourney results pending), but otherwise it was all "Cameron Crazies bay-bee!" and "What a classic, special game we have here tonight!", the usual Vitale Cameron Indoor Stadium BS. To put a staple on it all, if it were Hansbrough pushing his hand in a Duke player's face, and not the other way around, Vitale would have been vehement. In this case, he just called it frustration and nerves. Man do I hate homers. Even Notre Dame ones. Oh yeah, UNC-Duke in the tourney will be evil.
Sigh... being a UConn grad, I boycotted this shit. Now I really wish I hadn't. hahahahahahahhahah, shove that up your ass, ESPN (and William.)
