West Virginia isn't likely to hear their name called during this evening's NCAA Selection Show, so to cushion the blow, I thought we could check in with former Mountaineer stars Mike Gansey and Patrick Beilein and see what they're up to these days.
As it turns out, they spend their time walking through dark gyms and having jumpshooting contests for five West Virginia Lottery scratch-off tickets, and getting served by referees who shoot from their chest. I guess the West Virginia lottery people couldn't afford Kevin Pittsnogle.
I sincerely hope this is the last West Virginia-themed post of the weekend.

Ahhh, the stupidity tax. Still going strong...
do you live in west virginia? you have to, right?
"I sincerely hope this is the last West Virginia-themed post of the weekend."
Agreed. It's settled then. Let us celebrate this arrangement with the adding of chocolate to milk.
WEST FUCKIN' VIRGINIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If West Virginia doesn't make the tournament - and Duke does - there is nothing right with the world. Especially considering that WVU lost its second round game in the Big East tournament after a timekeeper in the Louisville game started the clock late, allowing for Pitino's Cardinals to tie the game in regulation. Just imagine if the shoe had been on the other foot. Pitino get cheated? Heaven forbid. The Mounties get cheated? Who cares?
A black person in Vest Virginia who doesn't play on the WVU football, bball, or track team actually wins something! And the janitors white! Nice, even though in essence he only won three bucks.
What, they couldn't get Jeff Hostetler for the commercial?
Lottery tickets are the medium of exchange in West Virginia. Everyone knows that. Dollars are about as good as pesos out there.
Which one is Gansey's 05-06 stat line, and which one is Redick's? (Points per game gives it away)
A: 33.8MIN, 5.7REB, 1.9AST, 55.0FG%, 42.9THREE%, 1.49AST/TO
B: 37.1MIN, 2.0REB, 2.6AST, 47.0FG%, 42.1THREE%, 1.06AST/TO
There's no reason Gansey shouldn't be on an NBA roster. He's a year and a half older, but neither guy could really make his own shot, and neither was great shakes as a defender in college, either. Somebody could've taken Gansey in the 2nd round and gotten JJ Redick minus the drunk driving and bad poetry for far less money.
I agree...I watched in-person as Gansey single-handedly kept WVU alive in their game against Wake Forest a few years ago at the NCAA's. The Mountaineers eventually won the game in 2 OT's and went on a run until losing to Louisville in the Elite 8. Gansey is a great shooter and could provide solid minutes for a lot of teams in the Association right now.
No, there is a good reason Gansey shouldn't be in the nba, the same reason Redick shouldn't. Neither of them are near athletic enough to create their own shot, and considering them sub-par defenders would be a compliment. Redick got drafted and very high because he went to Duke, just because he is there doesn't mean he deserves to be there. I don't know that he will live very far beyond his rookie contract.
