The big reason that college coaches abuse their pitchers is that the damage is long term. The pros make an investment in a pitcher over his career. If you're a college coach, and your pitcher's a senior (or even a junior), why do you care what his arm looks like in a couple of years?
@econdave: Maybe because you don't want to be known as a coach who can't send players to the big leagues, and who doesn't care about his players' health.
