Seriously, this is the most exciting story on SWAC football in years.

Both schools' bands continued to play as the opposing team lined up on offense, despite repeated warnings from officials and—gasp—the public address announcer. Conference rules prohibit the bands from playing after a team breaks from the huddle, but who are they to cut "When The Saints Go Marching In" off in the middle of the song?

The schools received only a reprimand, but a second violation would ban the band for a game, and a third would suspend them for the rest of the season. Think that's not a strong deterrent for a fairly effective distraction? I've been to a Grambling game. Without the band, there's really no reason to go.

<![CDATA[Where's Grand Theft Auto?]]>
This is a couple of weeks old, but we just saw it, and jeez, it's awfully entertaining. It's the California band's tribute to video games, and even though it's a reminder of just how geeky band folks are, it's still well, well worth it.

<![CDATA[We Have Captain Beefheart Reaching The Sweet 16]]> Check The NCAA Live Blog!

If you're like us, your NCAA pool bracket already resembles an acre of burning tires, and it's only Thursday. So why not head over to a version of March Madness you actually have a chance to win? At Band Madness, there's a 512-team field (the bracket is pretty impressive, actually; although we wonder what Jim Cooke would have done with it), and they're still playing the first round; Radiohead just won a laugher over Staind.

A whole bunch of matchups were decided on the last day of voting, but none was closer than Tool's victory over Lou Reed by only 16 votes in a matchup where 2558 total votes were cast. Jethro Tull came from behind to beat Muse by only 21 votes, blink-182 held off Supertramp by 36 votes, and a constantly-changing matchup between My Chemical Romance and Ween ended with My Chemical Romance pulling away by 90.

Damn Supertramp never could play defense. As far as upcoming games go, we are intrigued by this afternoon's tussle between Built to Spill and the Scissor Sisters. Hmm, we wonder who Majerus picked?

(For the record, we are APPALLED that The Beta Band is losing to Phil Collins.)

<![CDATA[So, This One Time, On The Band Bus ...]]> bandcamp.jpgNothing can beat the international mystery and intrigue of collegiate marching bands, and the Wisconsin band apparently did something so "boorish and patently offensive" that it can never be spoken of.

UW-Madison is not releasing details on what happened during the bus trip to the Sept. 23 game against the University of Michigan. ... [Chancellor John] Wiley warned in the letter he would consider suspending activities and travel of the band or replacing its leadership if there were more reports of "gratuitous vulgarity, sexualized banter or joking, hazing, or other forms of demeaning conduct."

So, apparently, something so wretched and horrible and degrading and AWESOME happened on the Wisconsin band bus a few weeks ago that no one can even talk about it, though if it happens again, there's gonna be hell to pay. We've been researching around to see if we can get a sense of what happened, but, so far, no dice. If anybody has any info, let us know or, in lieu of that, please feel free to post your most grotesque, offensive and unsubstantiated theories in the comments. Fred Smoot had to have been involved somehow, right?

UW Band Must Face The Music [Madison State Journal]

(UPDATE: So the details have come out. They include:

"• A female band member told to suck on a sex toy in an apparent hazing incident.
• Women being forced to kiss other women in order to gain access to bus bathrooms.
• Women being forced to draw pornographic pictures for older male band members, recite obscene limericks or stories, and read aloud explicit accounts of their sexual preferences composed for them by others for older male band members.
• The practice of women swapping shirts with males.
• Demeaning and abusive demands for younger band members to run errands and refill beer cups for older members."

Bah! That's it?!
