Not sure I have the energy to continue my smug, elitist bashing of another antiquated, plodding Big 10 team from my comfy coastal clime. No wait, I do.
Besides Notre Dame, is Cincinnati the next best choice? Up and coming football team, as evidenced by the last 3 years, solid basketball team, and I assume the academics are sufficient.
@That-Dude: The team most likely to be chose would be Pittsburgh; resuming an interstate rivalry with Penn State, solid basketball program, traveling fan base, and the prestige to fit into the Big 10.
@Mr Papagiorgio: Okay, I'll ask the question...why the fuck would Pitt WANT to join the Big 10? The university has built itself a basketball program that's a year-in year-out contender in the best hoops conference, & came within an extra point of a BCS bowl this year thanks to the shitty football conference they're in. What would Pitt gain?
@ClintonPortishead: I don’t have the AP Poll on hand but I’m 99% sure the Panthers didn't receive a single vote for top 25 consideration, not necessarily the year in-year out B-Ball program you speak of. But, to answer your question look at the BCS bowl games. Big 10 teams draw higher clout than Big East, plain and simple. You said it yourself Pittsburgh not in, Iowa in. Clearly Wanny’s boys are the better team but the bid went to the Big 10. You go where the respect and money is. In my opinion if Pitt was offered a chance to play they would.
@Mr Papagiorgio: This is the first year that's been the case, I think even a perennial contender deserves a rebuilding year once in awhile.
And as to your 2nd point, I think Iowa was demonstrably better than Pitt this year (I'm a Pitt alum) & the entirety of Pitt's success was due to weak scheduling. The program has a much better shot at competing in the up-and-down Big East than dealing with traditional powers in the Big 10. I just don't see how the hassle of the move would be worth it.
@ClintonPortishead: Hey now, Michigan State doesn't rebuild, they RELOAD. Like I said they have a good basketball program, it was a couple years back they were in the final four right?; but not quite perennial powers yet… Pittsburgh is a way better football team, Iowa need miracles to beat Northern Iowa, Arkansas State, Michigan(5-7), and Michigan State(6-6) and put up a whopping 29 points on Northwestern(8-4) and Minnesota(6-6) combined. I've been in fun houses with less smoke and mirrors!
I just think if offered to play for a bigger prize with more money you pull the trigger, ask Brain Kelly. If it were all about winning your division he'd still be at CMU kicking the shit outta the Bronco's....Wait he'd still be at Grand Valley State winning D2 Championships
@That-Dude: As Cincy demonstrates, any team that joins a bigger conference is improved by the conference first, then it improves the conference itself. If the B10 had patience and brought up a MAC team, that team would now be a BCS team, with BCS resources, and can get BCS players. But Ohio State would not let any Ohio team in.
Mark Mangino had a brief but disastrous run as Big Ten commissioner. When asked what was the best idea for #12 all he said was "I'd go with a Bear Claw, but glazed is never a bad choice"
The Big Ten will also start wearing lower cut blouses, cutting in extremely conspicuous places, and bursting into tears during class after telling an overblown story about its strained relationship with its father.
@ClintonPortishead: Although the Big-10 has just won this challenge for the first time, they have certainly held their own in march. Both the ACC and Big Ten have 10 final four teams in the last ten years (That is counting the OSU final four in '99 that was removed). The ACC is always thought of the best conference, so I think the Big-10 should get some respect. However the ACC has 4 championships to the Big-10's one in that same span
@ClintonPortishead: Having 7 teams from the 48-team Big East in the top-25 is impressive, but perhaps not quite as impressive as having the nation's #1 and #2 teams from your conference (as is the case with Kansas and Texas from the Big XII).
@tim_lincecum_dumpster: No doubt the Big 12 is very strong this year, but I always think of Best Conference in a top-to-bottom context. And yes, the Big East is large, but I'd like to see any other conference get half of their teams into the Tournament.
@ClintonPortishead: I agree that the Big East is strong from the top-to-middle of the conference, but I think it is always difficult to get a fair reading on just how strong the middle-to-bottom of the conference is due, in part, to its size. When a team (like Louisville last year) goes through a full Big East season and finishes the regular season with 26+ wins, they're legit. As for putting 50% of your league in the Big Dance, several college bball "experts" predict that the Big Ten will have 7, and maybe as many as 8, of its 11 teams in the tourney this year.

A solid basketball program just adds to the mystique, unlike Penn St. B-ball.
