Buck Burnette Learns Another Valuable Lesson in Karmic Justice

Last week, University of Texas back-up center Buck Burnette learned a very valuable lesson about both his Facebook and racist status, after he posted the disturbing hillbilly-like message "all the hunters gather up, we have a #$%&er in the whitehouse" on his personal page and was subsequently kicked off the team. Too bad — because this week Burnette could have started, since starting junior center Chris Hall will miss Saturday's game at Kansas due to a sprained left knee. Instead, freshman David Snow will get the nod. Hopefully, he doesn't say anything stupid on his Facebook page over the next two days.(Note: Not the same David Snow's Facebook.)

Buck Burnette Just Can't Stop Apologizing for Absent-Minded Facebook Racism

After Texas backup center Buck Burnette was kicked off the team for his idiotic Facebook status comment, he issued a sincere apology that, at the very least, proved he knew what he did was wrong. The online contrition tour continues for Burnette, and now he's fired off another apology via Longhorn fan site Orangebloods.com. This one passage, published by the Dallas Morning News, is a little more over the top and spiritual:

I sinned against man and God posting what I did. That statement breeds hate and it was never my intention to cause those controversial feelings. The people who know me and know my heart will know this to be true. I have received tremendous support from both black and white players on my team and for that I am truly grateful. For those that remain offended, I hope that over time you will be able to forgive me.

Deep. If Burnette is ever allowed back on the field again, his first order of business should be to do something symbolic to acknowledge his racial epiphany. Maybe he could wear a black and white glove and raise a fist over his head?

The big galoot pictured here is Buck Burnette, back up center for the University of Texas Longhorns. Check that — former back up center. You see, good ol' boy Buck here thought it would be funny to update his Facebook profile status with this message soon after Barack Obama's election:

"all the hunters gather up, we have a #$%&er in the whitehouse"

Kudos to Buck for putting symbols over the deplorable word (he probably wasn't censoring "butler") but the damage was already done. Word got back to Longhorns coach Mack Brown who immediately booted him off the team. Burnette has since taken down his Facebook page, but before he did, he left this contrite message to all those offended:

Clearly I have made a mistake and apologized for it and will pay for it. I received it as a text message from an acquaintance and immaturely put it up on facebook in the light of the election. Im not racist and apologize for offending you. I grew up on a ranch in a small town where that was a real thing and I need to grow up. I sincerely am sorry for being ignorant in thinking that it would be ok to write that publicly and apologize to you in particular. I have to be more mature than to put the reputation of my team at stake and to spread that kind of hate which I dont even believe in. Once again, I sincerely apologize.

Well, it is an apology and not the old "dressed as a drunk guy who was drawn on for Halloween" excuse, but it's still a little shameful that some of Buck's takeaway was that it's not "ok to write that publicly," but whatever. He'll be a better person after this. Hopefully.
