TCU and Boise State playing each other is a cop out. I'd much rather see each of them play a team from the BCS conferences. But I guess two non-BCS teams beating the chosen elite would make the BCS look pretty bad
@Shivver: If the writers want to legitimately keep doing their "wah wah wah Utah/Boise St/ TCU have a shot" columns, its up to them to give those teams their due shot at credibility.
@Chris Hanson's Axe: What do the writers have to do with this? These matchups are selected by TV execs and Bowl committees, who have a vested interest in not giving those teams a shot because it might crap all over their chosen system.
@Chris Hanson's Axe: The AP is no longer part of the BCS formula. They withdrew specifically because they didn't want to "create the story" or some such thing.
The formula is one-third each of coaches votes (ie, the information directors at a school), the Harris poll (former coaches, players, AD and retired media) and the computers.
I suppose in a larger sense they could influence things indirectly through their votes in the AP poll, but that would take large scale sports media collusion and I just don't see that happening.
As for the BCS matchups, they are partially pre-determined with conference tie ins and then there is an order of selection for at large schools. Because the Sugar and Fiesta bowls lost their auto tie ins (Bama and TX, respectively) they were effectively picking their own matchups from the at large teams. No doubt with some "help" from Fox.
