In other news, Cecil Cooper was apparently managing the Astros this season! [Houston Chronicle]

<![CDATA[Jeff Jagodzinski Has Not Had A Good Year]]> Tampa Bay has not even seen their new offense in real-time competition yet, but they have apparently seen enough to know that it stinks. They fired coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski today, just one week before Opening Day.

Jagodzinski has now been fired from two jobs in nine months, neither one of which was the gig he wanted in the first place. As you may or may not recall, Jags was head coach at Boston College, who a put a clause in his contract saying he couldn't interview for another job. So he interviewed with the New York Jets anyway, got fired from B.C. and then didn't get the Jets job. Oops.

Apparently, he latched on to the Raheem Morris Era (who is 13 years younger than J.J., by the way) in Tampa and that didn't work out so well either. Adam Scheffter said on SportsCenter that there was some dispute between Jeff Jags and quarterbacks coach Greg Olson over who should be starting behind center. Now Olson has his job, so we know who won that battle.

And Jiggsy is not even the first offensive coordinator to get bounced this preseason. The Chiefs dumped Chan Gailey on Monday. I don't want to tell these teams how to raise their assistant coaches, but if you don't give them the chance to fail on their own then they'll never learn anything.

<![CDATA[The Great Kevin McHale Experiment Is Over In Minnesota]]> After 15 seasons running the Timberwolves, Kevin McHale's services will no longer be needed. (According only to Kevin Love's Twitter? Jeebus.) Man, just eight or nine more years and I think he would have had it. [Pioneer Press; SportsBank]

<![CDATA[After All That...Jim Zorn?]]> The Washington Redskins, after a long, dilligent, much publicized, energy wasting search for a head coach, decided the best man for the job was former Seahawks quarterback and their new/former offensive coordinator, Jim Zorn. The search took 32 days — and thousands of miles on Dan Snyder's private plane — in a red herring-filled process that baffled both NFL insiders and fans alike.

One person seemingly most upset by this decision is blogger My Brain Says Rage, who offered this expletive-filled summation on Snyder's decision:

[H]e is going to give us three mediocure seasons until you fire him and hire Vince Lombardi's dead corpse to replace him.

At least it is not Jim Fassel, who would make me want to cover myself in red paint and try to ass fuck a bull. But Zorn is still a shitty choice, considering all that was out there.

Red paint and ass fuck a wha...?

Anyway, maybe this decision had less to do with football and more with Dan Snyder's holy right-wing political fascination:

Snyder is attracted to religious zealots in his business affairs... He [Snyder] is a big donor to the Republican Party, a supporter of President George W. Bush and close friends with George Allen, the former far-right-wing senator from Virginia who lost his Senate re-election bid to Jim Webb in 2006 primarily because he was caught on videotape referring to a Webb campaign volunteer as "macaca." ...Zorn is active with Pro Athletes Outreach, a group that aims "to recruit and equip an army of coaches, professional athletes and their families to make a positive impact in the world for Jesus Christ."

If that's the case, as a Redskins fan, I'd be kind of pissed.
