    I think if there is some kind of violent act on the premises, you can break the lease on grounds of personal safety or something like that. So I guess you can mug your neighbors or fire off an assault rifle outside or something. That'd do it.

    @Peter Cavan: I've done it twice in NYC. Once because I moved out early (and lost the deposit as a result) and last summer when my building was for sale and the new buyers bought me out of the lease. Technically, I didn't 'break' it that time, but I did get out early.

    @Peter Cavan: Well, the management are twats. I've been in the apartment for nearly four years now and the management has changed hands three times. Any maintenance requests take a week or longer to get filled. I had to call the police on my neighbors twice this weekend. Oh and etc.


    @Katni: I was just employed by a Canadian company. That should work.


    @Kid Presentable Azian Zero: I'm not concerned with my deposit now; it's time to leave.

    @PQ Crash: If they're a big management company and you live in a good rental market (like NYC) they'll keep your deposit and let you go. They can re-rent the place to someone else quickly.

    @Peter Cavan: Given my area (in between Seattle and Tacoma), I have no doubt that they'd be able to rent out my apartment quickly. They've also been remodeling every apartment's interior in between tenants, so hopefully they'll jump at the chance to get it done if I were to leave.


    I think it's a matter of re-reading my lease now and finding a clause that I can use to leave.


    @44 in a Row: I'm not worried about losing my deposit. It'll be worth losing out on it to leave.


    @Business_Socks: It'd be a bit odd when they go over the charred remains and find that my apartment was cleared out prior to said fire. The thought crossed my mind though.
