Posted 7 Hours Ago: @AutumnSpectacle Thanks, great stuff. We remember pre-BCS days where 1 met 2 rarely. BCS fixed that and has kept bowl tradition alive.
Putting aside the fact that no one could give a damn about the Meineke Car Care Bowl and so on ... how many college football fans (and I don't count myself among them) actually care about any bowl not named the Rose? Would anyone miss the Cotton and Fiesta bowls if they were replaced with a college football playoff? Is it really that important to "keep bowl tradition alive?"
@DennyCrane: Um, everyone who's not a Big 10 or Pac 10 fan. Unless you're advocating getting rid of the automatic affiliation. Then proceed as normal.
Also, the lesser bowls (not necessarily the Meineke or GalleryFurniture.com, etc.) give programs that are building/rebuilding something tangible to hold on to as an achievement. It's a pretty powerful jumping point from crappy/mediocre to respected/dominant, so unless you're able to keep all 68 teams (or at least 20+) in a playoff system, you're killing that morale/money booster.
@Chris Hanson's Axe: If you have to arbitrarily choose between two teams for an eighth spot, it still sucks, but it is MUCH less likely that you are cutting out a team that is arguably the best in the country. Now, if you had 9 undefeated teams or 9 one-loss teams, then it would be no different.
@Chris Hanson's Axe: I think the prevailing thought is that in the former case, a really good team could be shut out of the title picture. But if you're the borderline 9th best team in the nation, you probably weren't going to run the table anyway.
@formerly Chief Wahoo: hey, I would have taken Iowa +16 last week (and this was AFTER Stanzi hurt his ankle). Tressel doesn't exactly have a big game offense, though they let the running attack out this week.
Stanzi is from Mentor, btw- he went to Lake Catholic. Miss Michigan's family are big-time Iowa fans, ironically- that's where they're originally from.
The way I see it, former Buffs coach and current Christian superapostle Bill McCartney can just pass the goddam donation plate. I mean, what good are the Promise Keepers if you can't extort hard cash from their undying faith in the goodness of all men?
Also, too, Boulder's bevy of long-distance runners can donate their used nipple guards.
