Included in the list were Cleveland Browns wideout (and blog expert) Braylon Edwards, Kid Rock, some random reality show people, and ESPN's Belvedere-chugging "First Take" host, Dana Jacobson. MLive.com was at the event and noted that Edwards didn't come to play nice - especially with poor Dana:

Sometimes girls would play. They weren't very good, but the unwritten rule was always to let them shoot. Most in this game followed that code, allowing the two girls, Jacobson and Haglund, as well as Faris (not a girl, but he was on Project Runway, so that should tell you his basketball skill level) to shoot unimpeded when they had the ball. Well, Edwards wasn't playing nice and as Jacobson launched a shot, Edwards threw it back across halfcourt, allowing someone on his team (I think Terrell) to get a breakaway layup.

They also had a chance to snag Jacobson for a couple of quick questions, including this one about her unique relationship with blogs:

MLive: You had really weird incidents with blogs, any hard feelings carrying over from that?

DJ: Nope. No. No.

Stirring. Unfortunately, no photos of the after party surfaced at this point. I'm sure here and Kid Rock just got along famously at that thing.

<![CDATA[The Greatest Game Ever Played]]>

...Is not going to be at Detroit Tiger Curtis Granderson's second annual Celebrity Shoot-Out.

Celebrities with Michigan ties, including Miss America Vanessa Sumthinsumthin, former Playmate of the Year Sara Jean Underwood, and ESPN's resident public sot Dana Jacobson are set to participate as well as current and former athletes.

The game is for a good cause, though, supporting the Grand Kids Foundation, which in turn supports Michigan’s Inner City schools. The game is on January 17th and it looks like tickets are still available. If anyone in the Michigan area will be attending this event, please let me know if you'd like volunteer your paparazzi services for the night.

<![CDATA[Charlie Weis Still Hates Dana Jacobson]]> Since it's time for the big Michigan-Notre Dame game, the blogosphere has brought back the vodka-swilling Jacobson rant. Now The Big Lead is citiing a source that claims both Trey Wingo and Jacobson have sent personal letters of apology over the event. Evidently Wingo used the word "retarded," and Weis, who has a special needs child, was offended. According to TBL, Weis accepted Wingo's apology and forgave him. Jacobson? Not so much. He still hates her for insulting Touchdown Jesus and Notre Dame. He responded to her letter by ripping her about "professionalism."

And Charlie Weis knows all about professionalism. Professionalism is calling Michigan players thugs, refusing to answer questions from the media, blaming your predecessor for your own personal failings, and reacting to any question that doesn't deify you as a personal insult. Man, aren't we all just incredibly lucky that the man holding down civility in America today is Charlie Weis? Seriously, though, not accepting apologies? What is this, the third grade?

<![CDATA[Deadspin HOF Nominee: Dana Jacobson]]>
On a certain level, you have to like anyone who can piss off Charlie Weis, you know? Everyone forgets now that the Dana Jacobson story was actually broken by an Atlantic City newspaper. And she pretty much assured that ESPN won't be hosting anymore "celebrity" roasts.

The above picture didn't actually come out until a week-and-a-half after the Mike-and-Mike roast — I will never, ever tire of Trey Wingo's reaction there — which was long after we knew about "Fuck Touchdown Jesus." She was suspended by ESPN for a week, but that didn't stop protests from the Catholic League. (Remember: If the Catholic League and that dope Bill Donohue are angry with you, you're doing something right.)

I still think the picture, though, is what cinched Dana's nomination for the Deadspin Hall of Fame. I mean, can't you imagine how that plaque would look?

But is she a Hall of Famer? Seventy five percent is the threshold for induction. Vote below: Polls will be open until next Monday afternoon.

<![CDATA[Are You Offended By ESPN?]]>

That's the question posed by MarketWatch columnist Jon Friedman, who gives the WWL a thorough Bissingering based on the recent "lowbrow or boorish behavior" of some of ESPN's talent. Specifically, the incidents involving Jemele Hill, Dana Jacobson, and Bonnie Bernstein, respectively. Friedman's piece, titled "ESPN: The sports leader in embarrassment" goes after Senior Vice President and Executive Editor John Walsh for an explanation to the recent spate of inappropriateness coming out of Bristol.

Walsh answered carefully, explaining that he feels all of the incidents were handled appropriately and that, considering the enormous amounts of media content they push out, three incidents are not so bad.

"We'd rather the scoreboard says none," Walsh said. "But if the scoreboard says three (examples), we endure." He called them "three separate instances" and added: "Trying to group them together, I think, would not be a wise thing for you."

Friedman disagrees. In his story he writes, "In the news business, journalists will chalk up something out of the ordinary as an aberration. But when it happens twice, we wonder if it is a pattern. By the third time, it can reasonably be called a trend" and "ESPN rejects the idea that there is a pattern of recklessness in its ranks, but I'm not so sure."

Yes, that ESPN is contributing to the collective dumbing-down of our society with its lowbrow humor and boorish behavior. Welcome to the new media landscape.

Update: ESPN VP Of PR Josh Krulewitz sent this comment to Deadspin about Friedman's column:

"Obviously we disagree with the premise of an ESPN trend. As we said, the three incidents in the article were very unfortunate, yet unrelated. Mistakes happen across our industry and others. We tend to be the focus given the large amount of content we produce and the more than 1,000 personalities we employ. What's important is, when situations arise, we take them seriously and address them."

I guess they only address these issues with the women.

<![CDATA[Charlie Weis Can't Win On The Field, But Wins Off Of It]]>
One thing that was brought up on the Best Damn Sports Show last night prior to Will's segment was a quote made last week from Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis. Weis was speaking at a Gettysburg Notre Dame Alumni event and made this comment in regard to ND's losing record last season:

I could get hoodlums and thugs and win tomorrow. I won't do it that way.

Of course, the quote could be a nothing, harmless quote, made by Weis to an audience full of Central Pennsylvania Notre Dame alumni sitting in a banquet hall, eating lukewarm food out of chafing dishes, in an attempt to fire up a crowd even though his program is, under his tenure, a losing one. But it also could be interpreted as one that was very marginalizing, or that other big time athletic programs are filling their teams with "hoodlums and thugs," which is why it was brought up last night on BDSS last night, PTI , andfew other places around the web.

John Heisler, Senior Associate Athletic Director, said when I called him today he was aware of the quote but said that the university wasn't planning on commenting on the remarks at this time. He went onto say that "[Weis] was just trying to make a a point about student athletics at our institution — that we only recruit quality individuals and we just don't accept anybody here. That's no big secret." Heisler did add that he understands how some people could be offended by the comment, but seemed confident that the university wouldn't have to publicly apologize for the remark.

One of the event's attendees, and a director at the GNDAC, is Rick Staub, HVAC supervisor at Shipley Energy, "Central Pennsylvania's leading total energy supplier," who said that people who think that Coach Weis' comments were insensitive or racist were probably "Notre Dame haters."

"You know, we're like the Yankees to some people, " he said. Staub then asked if he was going to be quoted for the story and I said, yes, I did identify myself as a reporter and you are talking to me.

"I don't want my quotes to be in print whatsoever. None, no way..." (Hey, journalist folk: Don't you just hate it when people do that?) Staub then suggested I speak with the club president, Brendan Cushing-Daniels for a response.

Cushing-Daniels said Weis' quote was "absolutely not" racist or meant to be offensive in any way. He went on to say that he was "white Irish Catholic" and that there back in the old days of New York City, people like him were considered hoodlums and thugs. (Somebody's seen "Gangs of New York"... )

Daniels, who speaks with a slight country twang and a 1987 graduate of Notre Dame and a professor of economics at Gettysburg College, was genuinely annoyed at the question. "I find it remarkable and disturbing that people are saying that comment is in anyway racist." He also said that if "your website" makes any implication that the quote was in anyway racist that Deadspin could expect a libel suit.

"Look at the racial make-up of the football team!" he barked.

That's fine. There are a lot of black people on Notre Dame. But how many black people were in the crowd at your event?

"None, but I think that's more a symptom of the geographic makeup of this part of Pennsylvania. The Notre Dame alums who live in this area are white."

Maybe it wasn't a racist comment, and Weis' was using "hoodlums and thugs" to make a point that Bill "The Butcher" Cutting wasn't going to get into Notre Dame even if he did lead his inner city high school in touchdowns the last two years. And context and setting is key for this quote — why should Weis apologize for a comment he made in an informal setting from the safety of a dais that may have offended some people?

<![CDATA[Christian Group to Protest ESPN Tomorrow Over Culture of Insensitivity]]>

It seems the latest round of Berman videos was enough to prompt a return trip to Bristol for angry Christians. A press release reveals all of ESPN's sins that need to be addressed and protested tomorrow at noon:

The coalition is concerned there exists at ESPN a "lack of sensitivity to persons of faith and a culture of religious intolerance." To support this position view the link listed below showing ESPN anchor Chris Berman using the term "Jesus" and "Goddamn" in the workplace.
http://withleather.com/post.phtml?pk=4911

The Christian Defense Coalition will be calling on ESPN to take three positive steps toward building a culture of religious tolerance in their workplace:

*Discipline or terminate any employee that uses religiously intolerant and hateful language such as "Goddamn" or the negative use of "Jesus Christ" in the workplace.

*Sponsor a workplace seminar and dialogue on religious tolerance and discrimination in the workplace. ESPN has held similar seminars on race and gender but never on religion.

*Host a discussion on one of their programs featuring the topic of the offensive use of "Goddamn" and "Jesus Christ" within the sports world.

It is the goal of the Christian Defense Coalition to help ESPN realize the negative use of "Jesus Christ" and "Goddamn" in the workplace is as offense and hateful as using the term "nigger" in the workplace.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, comments, "We must work for an America in which there is zero acceptance of religious intolerance in the workplace for all faith traditions. Hateful and intolerant expressions like 'Goddamn' or the negative use of 'Jesus Christ' should be viewed with scorn and outrage.

"Corporate America must begin to understand that terms like 'Goddamn' and the negative use of 'Jesus Christ' in the workplace are no different than using expressions like 'faggot' or 'nigger' in the workplace.

"Sadly, ESPN still doesn't seem to get it when it comes to religious intolerance and discrimination in the workplace. Their refusal to adequately address the Dana Jacobson situation and comments made by Chris Berman indicates there exists a culture of religious insensitivity at ESPN.

"Our hope is that ESPN will take a positive first step toward ending workplace religious intolerance by implementing our three recommendations. By doing so, a powerful message will be sent to corporate America that people of faith should not be treated as second-class citizens while at work."

Protest starts at Noon on West Street in front of ESPN. (Across from the McDonald's, the release says.)

Sounds like a party. Suggested items to bring: Chardonnay with bite, Grey Goose,

<![CDATA[Put A Cork In The Grey Goose!]]> A little birdie — with a healthy appetite for sunflower seeds and large-breasted woman — just flew into my apartment and whispered to me that, apparently, ESPN has yanked all coverage of the Dana Jacobson story. How dare they!

What's surprising to Brooks — as well as myself — is just how much ESPN covered this damn "story" in the first place. In fact, scratch that, what's surprising to me is that ESPN even covered this at all! I mean, you're telling me that the Vodka Queen's escapades were actual lead stories on SportsCenter and ESPN Radio? Seriously? (I don't really follow the WWL up here in Canada, eh.) That is just mint. I love it!

Anyway, Bristol has begun directing ESPN-owned radio stations to stop mentioning Jacobson on-air and to remove Jacobson-related material from its websites. So, yeah, I better have a talk with Will.

<![CDATA[ESPN Sends Dana Jacobson Away For A Week]]> The official word has come down: Dana Jacobson has been suspended by ESPN for a week following her apparent meltdown at the Mike and Mike Roast.

Jacobson has released an official apology.

"I am sorry. My remarks about Notre Dame were foolish and insensitive. I respect all religions and did not mean anything derogatory by my poorly chosen words. I also deeply regret the embarrassment I've caused ESPN and Mike and Mike. My actions at the roast were inappropriate and in no way represent who I am. I won't make excuses for my behavior, but I do hope I can be forgiven for such a poor lack of judgment."

In case you've forgotten, here are those Notre Dame comments.

Now that Jacobson has been suspended for a week, we would like to note that this was a celebrity — well, "celebrity" — roast, and certainly Jacobson's "Fuck Notre Dame, Fuck Touchdown Jesus" jokes would be a little more appropriate there than they would be in almost any other context. We suspect two things did Jacobson in; first was the actual Atlantic City paper calling her "embarrassing," and the second was ... Bill Donohue.

Who's Bill Donohue? He's the president of the Catholic League, an innocent-sounding title that belies the fact that he's a self-promoting, bellicose screaming hack whose television persona couldn't be further from the tenets of modern Catholicism than if he were actively trying to recruit people to Satan. (Which is possible; Donohue does incalculable damage to the Church every time he opens his mouth.)

Donahue, brilliantly satirized on "South Park," took time out from his busy schedule of mock outrage to weigh in on Jacobson's apology.

"It is obvious, then, that neither Jacobson nor ESPN is dealing with this matter in a professional way," Donohue declared. "To put this issue behind them, ESPN must deal with this issue quickly, publicly and fairly, something it has yet to do. After all, most Christians are yet unaware of this event, but once they learn of it, they are sure to demand accountability."

We know we make fun of ESPN around these parts, but when Bill Donohue is calling you out ... you know you're probably doing just fine. We think this whole thing was just a Roast joke gone wrong. Jacobson will take a week off, ESPN will move on, we'll probably never see the video and hopefully Bill Donohue will shuffle off and we'll never have to type his name on this site again.

<![CDATA[First Video Of Mike And Mike Roast Surfaces]]> JEFFREY ROSS MIKE AND MIKE ROAST

Unfortunately, we don't have the Dana Jacobson video yet, but the first little smidgen of footage from the Mike And Mike Roast has hit the Internets.

We will confess that the phrase "lamer than Ditka's cock" is pretty funny; we do like us some Jeffrey Ross. But nothing yet from the Jacobson camp yet; we imagine that video being locked away somewhere deep in the bowels of Bristol HQ. A tipster who was there gives us a slight rundown, however:

. try THIS on for size....among her drunken statements made from the dais....(with Charlie Weis in attendance)....

"f... Notre dame"
"f....touchdown Jesus"
and - the step-aside-because-lightning-is-about-to-strike... "f.... Jesus."

Supposedly a long letter of apology to Coach 3-8 has been dispatched.

She had no recollection who ushered her out of harm's sway.

Little sympathy for this devil among the troops.

The delicate sensibilities of Charlie Weis must be protected.

<![CDATA[Dana Jacobson Has The Sole Appropriate Reaction To The Mike And Mike Roast]]> Last Friday night, they held that "Mike And Mike Celebrity Roast" thing in Atlantic City. It was about as entertaining as you'd expected it to be, according to the Press Of Atlantic City. (No offense to Trey Wingo, but when you host half the show, and the other half is hosted by Jeffrey Ross, you're in trouble.) But we're not here to talk about Mike And Mike, or the Roast. We're here to talk about Dana Jacobson.

The former "Cold Pizza" diva and current "ESPN First Take" Bayless wrangler apparently had a wee bit too much fun.

ESPN anchor Dana Jacobson made an absolute fool of herself, swilling vodka from a Belvedere bottle, mumbling along and cursing like a sailor as Mike & Mike rested their heads in their hands in embarrassment. [Comedian Eddie] Griffin came to the podium to defend her after she was booed by the crowd. Ross eventually had to pull her off stage, too.

We hear rumblings of a rather outstanding video that was taken of this, but we haven't seen it yet. (You know where to find us.)

All told, we've always enjoyed Jacobson — we think of her as, like, the youngest, coolest mom on our block growing up — and we like her even more now. We can think of no more appropriate reaction to being forced to attend a Mike And Mike Roast than swigging from a bottle of Belvedere, Jim Morrison-style, while jumping on stage and, essentially, committing career suicide. We'd do the exact same thing, had we been in that position. And we wouldn't have looked as perty.
