<![CDATA[Outstanding Acheivers In Beijing Not Named Michael Phelps]]>
• I really can't stand to watch gymnastics more than once every four years. It's agonizing. There's such a clear disadvantage in starting some routines first, as Shawn Johnson did in the floor exercise, only to be overtaken by Romania's Sandra Izbasa, who went last. It was Johnson's third silver medal in Beijing.

• How would you like to be a 41-year-old woman that everyone introduces by saying, "This is 41-year-old Dara Torres." Suck. Torres, who actually did some sideline reporting for NBC in their XFL coverage back in the day, has some experience with being a freak, and nearly capped off her Olympic comeback with gold. She missed Germany's Britta Steffen by 1/100th of a second in the 50-meter freestyle final. The silver is Torres' 11th Olympic medal. Nice going, mom.

Raphael Nadal won Spain's first-ever gold in men's tennis, beating Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. He will officially dethrone Roger Federer as the world's number one ranked men's player on Monday. Federer lost to James Blake (USA! USA!) in the quarterfinals.

• Oh, and the Willams sisters kicked the shit out of everyone to win gold in women's doubles.

<![CDATA[Dara Torres' Ex-Husband: Low On Sperm, High On Animosity]]>

It appears the press might be getting a little sick of Dara Torres' old lady swim feats. At least that's the only reason it would seem the Palm Beach Post has decided to interview her embittered ex-husband. West Palm surgeon Itzhak Shasha and Torres were married for 16 months, but then divorced. Soon after, Torres began shacking up with David Hoffman, who's the father of her two-year old daughter, and who was also the fertility doctor treating Dara and Itzhak for, one would assume, their baby-making problems.

Needless to say, asking Itzhak how he feels about all the Dara Torres fever sweeping the country, is not going to result in a positive response.

"Believe me, I've achieved many significant things in my life," he said, "and none of them was being married to her. I don't want to talk about that marriage, and I don't want to talk about her."

Hoffman insists he started dating Torres after she was separated from her first husband, but still...dude. It's bad enough when your ex-wife starts dating anybody, but it has to be especially maddening when she goes off and starts romancing the man who knows all about your personal problems and who's probably scrutinized your semen countless times.

<![CDATA[Dara Torres Is Paying For Everyone's Sins]]> Granted, a 41-year-old woman breaking all sorts of swimming records is a red flag in today's performance-enhanced sports world, but is she being unfairly scrutinized?

Torres appeared on Dan Patrick's show today to speak about the myriad questions the media "has to ask" her in order to convince them (and all the non-believers) in her un-enhanced athletic ability.

Torres says she's taking a "proactive" approach, asking for any and all tests available to prove that, yes, she's actually a 41-year-old mother of two who is beating women almost half her age in her sport. "If I was taking something, do you think I would ask to be tested?" , she said. Torres said the only things she puts in her body (besides food and babies) are "Protein, amino acids, and vitamins."

The SF Gate's Gwen Knapp — who recently called Tiger Woods an idiot — says there'sabsolutely a double standard in the way Torres is being treated:

Performance alone rarely triggers widespread suspicion in the media, but it sufficed for accusations against Torres and, 20 years ago, Florence Griffith-Joyner. The same scrutiny does not apply to men until they have a failed test on their record, federal investigators on their tails or a member of their entourage under indictment.

Unfortunately, there aren't enough tests out there for Torres to take. It's not because she's a woman, but since the media threw its arms around so many seemingly miraculous heroes so many times, only to find them pop up on an HGH list here, in the cellphones of an indicted personal trainer there, it's harder than every for stories that are too good to be true to be anything but fairy tales. Sucks for her, but that's the price you pay for being absurdly great at something.
