<![CDATA[One Lousy Opening Day]]> You think you had a bad day yesterday? Dodgers starter Derek Lowe, inexplicably starting on Opening Day, was hammered by the Braves. And when the game was over, he had to go home and read transcripts of divorce proceedings spread all over the Internet. They were initially posted by the subscription-only RonFineman.com, and excerpted by the excellent L.A. Observed. Some highlights:

• The Red Sox felt Lowe "had a drinking issue," and Lowe's agent, Scott Boras, even suggested an intervention. When Scott Boras is a positive influence in your life, there are problems.
• Lowe spent much of last year drinking in the Dodgers clubhouse.
• Lowe has "undiagnosed ADD," which allowed the Red Sox doctors to give him Ritalin every day.

These are, of course, divorce proceedings, and Ms. Lowe notoriously hung out on the On The DL boards trolling for info, so it was unlikely this was going to avoid being messy. But yeah: How was your Monday?

<![CDATA[Pity The Poor Derek Lowe]]> A couple of days ago, the Los Angeles Times' Bill Plaschke wrote a story about the emotional difficulties of Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe, who last year famously left his wife for Fox Sports broadcaster Carolyn Hughes. (You thought we were gonna say "Fox Sports broadcaster Tom Arnold." Admit it.)

Anyway, Lowe talks about how difficult the year was for him.

"It was hard, it was hurtful, it was embarrassing," Lowe said. "You look at athletes, they say it shouldn't affect you, but you take your uniform off and you drive home and you're a person, and when things are bad, it's really tough."

We agree. When Lowe — who says he wanted to "go on the disabled list with emotional distress" and that he "just didn't care" — leaves his wife for the woman who hangs around the team as a "reporter," after a history of shady behavior with women, and then is found out, it can be hurtful and difficult. Particularly for, you know, your wife.

We don't intend to be mean. But forgive us if our Victim Meters are somewhat low for Mr. Lowe. If only he had married Andrei Kirilenko's wife/

<![CDATA[Athlete Run-In: Blocking Derek Lowe]]> Today's final athlete run-in story is about one of our favorite people around here: Famed party guy Derek Lowe, who never met a lady (or ladies) he couldn't slur over. This story almost makes you feel a little bad for Lowe, until you visit On The DL and check out some of the great tales over there. But anyway, to our story, from Mike in Boston.

It's common knowledge in Boston that the players like to hit the bars after games. While some made a name for themselves last year with their boozing (just take a look at the pics from "On the DL"), none were as infamous as Derek Lowe in his time here. His lifestyle has been well chronicled since his departure from the city, but most people knew what was going on. One of my sister's friends saw Derek pitch a few years back. He threw real well and got the win. After the game, my sister's friend went to Landsdowne Street. For the people that don't know, that's the street directly behind the wall or "green monster" with a bunch of clubs and bars. He was standing in one of the places when an already drunk DLowe stumbled in with two girls under his arms... neither of which was his GORGEOUS wife. He approaches Derek to have this convo: Friend: Hey Derek, great game tonight. You pitched well. Lowe: (slurring) Thanks man. Friend: I wonder if your wife and kids were watching. Lowe: (expletive) you! At that point, the two women immediately ran away, prompting Derek to chase them down. I want to say that was karma for Derek, but the man code of law was kind of broken here. Still funny nonetheless.

For the record, we highly recommend you not do this when you run into an athlete at a bar. Just a suggestion.

<![CDATA[Bronson Arroyo: Now Officially A Rock Star]]> We were going to reveal the final of our three blind items today, but those crazy ladies at On The DL have something even better for today, so we're gonna hold off. They've put together a compendium of photos online of baseball players boozing and tarting it up with various "fans" across the country. Included are Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina, unemployed slob Sidney Ponson, Dodgers broadcaster-humper Derek Lowe and Red Sox "rocker" Bronson Arroyo, pictured above — and in this photo album — with a woman who is most definitely not his wife.

We'll be back tomorrow with that last player revealed, but for now ... enjoy!

<![CDATA[More Fallout From Derek Lowe's Banging]]>
More fun with Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe, his soon-to-be-ex-wife and Fox Sports "broadcaster" Carolyn Hughes: The Boston Herald reported this weekend that the Red Sox might have actually used Lowe's alleged infidelities as an excuse not to resign him last year. According to the paper, Lowe showed up at a charity event last year with a woman who wasn't his wife — that's a picture of his wife with him above, by the way — and Boston owner John Henry was "angered." Henry denied the story. Meanwhile, journalists are still all agog over Hughes' behavior. Though it does seem like about the only way to get players to trust the media again.
