    Is it not strange that when we view talented athletes with overbearing parents we try to fit them into two categories: Inevitable trainwreck or inevitable champion? Does it seem like there's a tendency to project one or the other onto Michelle?

    @finite_elephant: That's a good point. I don't think either one is inevitable in this case. I think that's part of why people still care.

    Has going to Stanford changed Michelle a lot? I always thought going to college helps some young athletes get out of their shell, but hardens the shell for others. Which is it for her?

    @MidwestCoastBias: Nice handle, first of all. I have the same bias. I think Stanford has definitely helped. She used to spend entire summers on the road, in hotels and rental cars. She got tired by about this time every year. Now I think she's excited to live in both worlds.

    Seeing how this year was a low point for the LPGA - how much pressure do you think Michelle feels about being the "Tiger" of the LPGA - not necessarily in flat-out game, or race/cultural impact - but in being the big must-watch person who will attract non hardcore LPGA fans to briefly pay attention?

    @David Hume: I think the pressure is to win. She's always enjoyed the attention. She actually worried as a child that people would stop watching her.

    @ericadelson: Ahh. Well, with a rash of very good players, but no dominant, dramatic superstar, I'm sure the LPGA brass (such as it is) is dying for her to start chalking up wins and major performances.

    @NordoftheBlings: I did. They all like her. I get the sense that even her detractors like her as a person. I tried to interview Obama, who went to Punahou, but he was busy with something. Whatever.

    What do you think was the intended goal of taking on men before she could consistently beat women? Just a cash/publicity grab, or was there some large idea in mind?

    @Dashiell Bennett: A big part of it was a lack of competition in Hawaii. There really was no challenging junior girls tour to speak of. In order to get any real competition, she had to play against boys. I honestly do not think this was a publicity grab. She talked about playing against men from the time she was 10. Oh, and go Tigers.

    the States

    Somewhere outside Seoul is a genetic engineering lab that's trying to develop a golfer that's the average of Michelle Wie and Christina Kim in terms of height, rack, and personality.

    Considering her track record, does she actually have a shot of making it as a pro? Were the "female Tiger" references part of her undoing?

    @kiddicus: Oh definitely. She's one of the best rookies on tour, and she's 19. Annika won her first LPGA tournament at 24. She might be "unmade" as a phenom, but definitely not as a golfer. She's just starting.

    Wie had a great Solheim Cup performance, and wasn't even that controversial as a captain's pick. Have you kept up with her this season? What is her relationship like with other LPGA pros and has there been much change this year?

    @Gravy: She's happier, and less anxious. She told me that life at Stanford helps a lot. But she's always loved match play and team play. At the Curtis Cup years ago, she would finish her match and run to watch and cheer on teammates. So this is not an act. The big question is whether she can finish a tournament when she's playing only for herself.

    @crazyjoedavola: She's very close to her parents and I think she always will be. But I think Dave Stockton has a chance to make a huge difference in Wie's short game if he's given the time and space.
