In other words, did they bother to go beyond trade school accounting principles and actually, you know, think about stuff?

unfortunately for the business world, there are things called operating expenses - calhoun's salary, for instance - which need to be paid out of that revenue.
never took one business class.

Irregardless of what he meant, he was pointing that the expense of his salary was covered by the revenue generated by the basketball program, meaning that his salary isn't a drain on the taxpayers of Connecticut. And he's right.
Maybe he's overpaid given the amount of revenue generated, but he's not costing the state money.

And now further down the chart we see that the men's program had $6,009,728 in expenses. Unless I'm reading this wrong, that's a difference of $1,324,486, which is less than Calhoun's total salary.

Then factor in intangibles like the goodwill from having a consistently successful, high-profile basketball team, the effect it has on alumni donations and applications, etc. and he's probably worth $1.6 million.

Not saying there's not an effect. There may be. But everyone seems to agree there has to be an effect and it has to be large without ever really...testing to see if there's an effect and how large it is.

Of course, the UConn basketball team will never be purchased, so we'll never find out how much goodwill it has actually accrued on an accounting ledger. But know this, no other coach right now has taken a program with such a slight history of success and turned it into a national powerhouse. Calhoun has done a fantastic job of building a program at a school with few discernible advantages in recruiting (location, resources, history, etc.). That's why he's worth $1.6 million, that's why I say he's worth more than probably any other coach working right now.
Of course, he could have handled that question better, but I'll take brusque and effective over nice and incompetent any day.
