Congratulations, America, On Not Hating John Amaechi
John Amaechi spoke yesterday to the Log Cabin Republicans, the nation's largest (though, let's be honest, they probably don't have a ton of competition) organization of republicans who support gay rights. Amaechi said he expected the worst when he came out, but was pleasantly surprised at the reaction. More » -

The newsworthiness of the "John Amaechi coming out" story has probably come and gone, so let's consider this a part of the new "Jerry Sloan calls his players 'fucking cunts'" story. NBA Stars Handling Amaechi News With Typical Grace And Aplomb
As the ESPN blitz ramps up for all John Amaechi, all the time over the next week, they've been helpfully compiling current athlete and coach reactions to Amaechi's "revelation." As you might suspect, most players have been coached to say, "Hey, no problem, all good, I just want to win," but, inevitably, some fun quotes have sneaked out a bit. But our favorite, as quoted from Just Call Me Juice, is from the 76ers' Steven Hunter: More » -

Your Anonymous Gay Former NBAer Is Less Anonymous Now (But Only Slightly So)
Last week, a Chicago Sun-Times "blog" mentioned that a former NBA player was going to come out of the closet on Valentine's Day, because that's a day for love. (Or desperate loneliness and regret. Pick your poison.) We'd heard this rumor, and some others have been speculating as well, and every source we've talked to says the player is ... former Utah Jazz and Orlando Magic "center" John Amaechi. Underwhelming, we know. Amaechi is a Penn State grad, a Brit and purveyor of his own Web presence.
