The last time we checked in with Michael Sam, he had signed a two-year contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. But just three weeks later, and the day before the Alouettes’ first exhibition match, Sam has left the team amidst murky circumstances. The Alouettes released a curious statement…
Are you ready for some workouts???
When Michael Sam publicly came out back in February, the New York Times talked to the football player's father, Michael Sam, Sr., who reacted by getting drunk at an Applebee's. Joel Anderson of BuzzFeed caught up with Sam's father recently and pried more into the relationship between him and his son.
The Dallas Cowboys announced today that Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL, has been cut from the team's practice squad.
(Replacing subtle racism with overt homophobia is not progress, South Carolina!)
After failing to make the St. Louis Rams' 53-man roster or practice squad, it looks like Michael Sam has found himself a new gig as a member of the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.
NFL teams had to cut rosters down to 53 players by 4 p.m. today, and all eyes were on the Rams to see if they'd keep seventh-round pick Michael Sam. Unfortunately, Sam was cut by St. Louis, although he is still eligible for the team's practice squad, and can be claimed on waivers by another team.
The player didn't want to shower with his team. He was from the wrong side of the culture, and while he could share a field and a depth chart with his teammates, the locker-room shower was too intimate and thus too fraught a space.
Earlier today, we republished a profile of Michael Sam that originally appeared in Out Magazine. Within the story, there is a moment when Sam realizes that the reporter he's talking to—grudgingly—is gay. The mask drops, and you can almost feel his relief radiating off the page. From the story:

Yesterday, SportsCenter brought us an on-the-scene report from Rams camp that featured a very weird discussion of Michael Sam's showering schedule. ESPN would like everyone to know that they are sorry for doing that.
This morning's episode of SportsCenter briefly checked in with reporter Josina Anderson, who is on the scene at Rams training camp. She was asked to talk about how Michael Sam is fitting in with his new teammates, and Anderson went ahead and told us about how Sam's showering habits.
Michael Sam sacked Johnny Manziel on Saturday. It was all very exciting. Sam did the "money" thing and everything. And, through a roundabout fashion, a bad-idea Twitter bet turned into a donation to a good charity. Everybody won.

Tony Dungy tried again today to explain his Michael Sam comments, this time on the The Dan Patrick Show, and it somehow became all about Jonathan Martin.
Maybe Tony Dungy really should rethink whether he would draft a guy like Michael Sam because, for a player dealing with his first NFL training camp controversy, Sam responded to Dungy's I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin' homophobia pretty perfectly. He was funny, mildly self-deprecating, and even said Tony Dungy was…
