Please God...give me Shanahan to the Chiefs. It's perfect for him really. It would allow him to continue to exact revenge twice a season on the Raiders and allow him to attempt revenge on the Broncos twice a year.
And it's perfect for me because it would get Herman Fucking Edwards out of my sight.
@Signal to Noise: I want a team that's fun to watch. Playoffs and SBs are obviously the goal...but if I'm going to see losses I want them to at least be entertaining.
For example, I was fine with the Vermeil/Saunders Chiefs. Sure, they lost games, but it was fun as hell to see the games. I'm tired of Herm Edwards Fieldgoalfests and of having our punter be the team MVP.
Our defensive issues are the result of Carl Peterson (letting talent like Jared Allen walk), Herm Edwards and Gunther Cunningham. Bring in a competent talent evaluator and a D coordinator with half a brain and the Chiefs will be fine.
@FiddlingWhileJimRomeBurns: Shanahan can't eval defensive talent and has gone through float-brains for D-coordinators the past four years. (Only Jim Bates had half of one and he was out in a year too.)
He can and should get a job again, but he should never be in charge of a team's personnel department EVER AGAIN. The only coach who's earned that right is the Hobo.
I didn't think Bowlen had the stones to do it. Should have happened after firing the third DC in as many years.
Shanny's offensive genius was the product of Terrell Davis and John Elway. Best to allow the bloodletting now and build a team with some ability to play defense.
@Signal to Noise: But has there ever been anything wrong with that zone-blocking scheme? It really has done good, solid things with a lot of interchangeable parts, and carried the team to Super Bowls with triple-A talent at running back and on the line, no?
@Summer-of-George: If Kubiak is the frontrunner, doesn't that look like more or less a lateral move from Houston?
Also, mea culpa on Cowher: he's got adult kids in NY/NJ that he's cited as a reason to stick around there, so going to Colorado's probably out.
@Rock You Like An Iracane: Terrell Davis was NOT triple-A talent. The problem is that everyone else after him (save Clinton Portis) was. He never made it to the SB after that again.
Look, my reason to want Shanny gone had more to do with complete inattention to defense and inability to draft good defensive personnel the last four years. The Super Bowl teams were so offensively proficient that the defense never really had to rescue 'em too much.
@Signal to Noise: As a Packer fan who remembers Dorsey Levens doing nothing and a Favre-in-his-prime aerial attack getting stifled in the Super Bowl, I seem to remember some semblance of defense being played.
Also, I'm confused by your first paragraph; do you mean that Davis wasn't triple-A talent, just like all except Portis in the lineage? If so, how did the Broncos ever win those titles in the first place?
@Rock You Like An Iracane: no. Davis was major, serious talent. Everyone else save Portis was Triple-A. That talent was on display when he was barely in his second year. He just didn't really get the chance to display it at UGA.
