Crosby, Ovie, Semin (follows Ovie, I guess?), Tanguay, Kovalev, Koivu (those three on my top line in my little virtual world), Carey Price, Kane, Toews, and Lidstrom.
But I could probably do closer to 100 names, maybe more.

Non-Avs the first 10 that come to mind:
Ovechkin, Iginla, That whiny bitch-ass coward Phaneuf, Luongo, Crosby, Malkin, Jordan Staal, Eric Staal, Drury, Lundqvist.

Deadspin is kind of the anti-ESPN right? I mean we kind of pride ourselves on seeing through the ESPN crap charade and making our own choice on sports and having a brain right?
Then why oh why do so many people think that being unable to name 10 current NHL players is something to be proud of. To me this is just an implicit admission that you're buying what ESPN is selling. I haven't watched an NBA game in 2-3 years and I could probably name 20-25 players, and I watch less than 10 MLB gamesa year and I can name at least 25 players.
Why is being ignorant of a major sport, and the NHL is every bit as major as the NBA, something a sports fan is prod of?

The NHL is averaging more fans per game than the NBA this season. Yes you can point at television contracts and ratings, but all that ignores the 6 Canadian teams, which is like taking the Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, and let's say Bulls, 76ers, and Pistons out of equation and talk about how popular the NBA is.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the NBA, and I understand why it can be hard to learn the names of current NHLers, the US media exposure is awful (mainly because ESPN drives the sports conversation and they hate the NHL), but to actually be proud to be ignorant is something that should never happen.

No offense, but "ESPN hates my sport/league" is about the stupidest argument you can make. I'm a soccer fan, so believe me, I've read plenty of the same from other soccer fans complaining about the Mouse's soccer coverage. At least ESPN covers the sport as if it were a major sport.
ESPN will love any sport or league that will bring in eyeballs and ad dollars. It liked NHL plenty in the wake of Rangers breaking the duck, and that brief period in the mid/late 90s when there were a handful of recognizable names and the Red Wings and Avs were winning the Stanley Cup. If NHL teams actually drew interest from fans beyond their local markets, ESPN/ABC would be knocking on Bettman's doors and looking to break the contract with Versus/NBC.
But when it takes a Red Wings vs Penguins matchup in the Stanley Cup to draw a 1.8, then you're a poor man's NASCAR.

I don't want to get into an NBA vs NHL pissing match, but in everyday conversation I don't hear anyone talk about either of them. In fact the only two sports I hear anyone talk about is MLB and NFL. Everything else is niche at the moment. There's no big 4.. there's a big 2.

This was a slow year for me. Normally I go a lot of places. Next year should be a longer list because the wife and I are planning a Germany trip and I would bet money I'll be taking some business trips too.

Ovechkin, Crosby are 2 of the new guys everyone should have heard of. Roenick (yup still active) from video games. Joe Sakic has been around forever. Ditto Niklas Lidstrom, Mike Modano and Martin Brodeur. The infamous Staal Brothers bachelor party. Zednik had his throat slashed last year, and Sean Avery was in the news for nearly 5 weeks.
And if you're not familiar wth Henrik Zetterberg's girlfriend yet, well that's your own damn fault:
