Just further proof of how idiotic and meaningless the BCS is. Could you imagine a coach in any other sport having an undefeated team and then right before the postseason begins just saying, It's been real, bitches. Seacrest out"?
Look, divorce is never easy on the kids. Do you guys remember the ugly custody battle over Hugo Chavez when Robin Wright and Sean Penn's marriage failed?
An unemotional farewell would have been if Kelly announced his departure to an uncaring locker room full of Bearcats nihilistically lounging in hot tubs of ennui.
The system leaves these coaches almost no choice but to lie. As long as schools can hire away coaches before the last bowl game, they have to lie, because until they are sure they have the new job, they can only be hurt by telling the truth.
@Preopsician: Ummm, how about the choice to just shut the fuck up and not say anything? At least to your own team, no reason to tell them you'll be back if you don't know, unless you just want to beat Pitt to make sure you get new job.
@Las Goteras: Really? The media is speculating Coach will leave, players ask him, and he should remain silent? Maybe he can hold his hands over his ears when the players ask and yell "I can't hear you, I can't hear you..."
@formerly Chief Wahoo: Who said the players asked him? And even if they did- what is wrong with telling them he'll consider job offers after the season just like any other season and then no more talk about it, lets focus on Pitt? He didn't have to knowingly lie to their faces- people justify when coaches do it, but it is bullshit. It's a dick move and totally unneccesary- coaches don't have to be 100% forthcoming with media/team, but they don't have to blatantly lie to their face either.
@Preopsician: They need to move the beginning of the recruiting period to right after the last bowl game. That's the reason these coaches bail right at the end of the season--because they need to get out and start recruiting RIGHT NOW.

Those "others" must be my Bridge club. Hey Mildred Johannsen, it's all in the game, yo, all in the game.

Thus explaining why it took Charlie Weis 5 years to leave Notre Dame.
