do i think that Rosenberg has an axe to grind? not necessarily. do i believe he made a molehill into a mountain? most definitely. asking all the former UM players who have transferred over the past two years about the validity of the program is akin to asking all of my ex-gfs why i'm such a bastard. i may very well be a bastard! however, the preponderance of evidence shouldn't come from an obviously biased source.
there are just as many former wolverines speaking out in favor of RichRod in many articles across the nation. Not to mention even the OSU players said that they put in as many hours every season as the UM players do because it's part of the process of how they become better players.
I don't think you are getting what the fanbase divide is here. rosenberg has been plenty snotty to rodriguez, and in the pompous “michigan should be better than this” manner that you actually probably hate yourself. Michigan man this, Michigan man that.
on the merits, breifly, the idea that he should or could have kept ryan mallett to start is maybe the dumbest thing of the many dumb things said about rodriguez. and the MSU/UM recruiting instate thing is an asinine non-story (michigan had the top recruit instate last year and they have the top this year, plus, you know, the recruits from other states ARE better).
the real lesson of the quotes you point out is the fact that he’s just a lame headline-monger as a writer. look at his selection of topics. he brings up every possible one of the bs rodriguez non-controversies and then takes a vaguely disdainful “on the one hand, on the other hand” position that manages to insinuate that Rodriguez is a no-class interloper while ostensibly taking the high road.
but even more important is the article you didn’t include: the thing itself! it, really truly, is a shoddy, misleading piece (look at the dr. saturday coverage of it), and the freep went all out on it and even brought up Ed Martin. writing that piece IS a personal campaign against Rodriguez, all by itself.
I mean, I don't understand why you (deadspin) are trying to sell the fans DEFENDING the 3-9 coach who was the worst in school history as the fevered freaks. "let's be patient with this guy and not nag him out of town, setting the program back again, just because he's from out of state and runs the program differently than Bo and Lloyd." what frothing fanboy madness!!!
Did I just compare Rich Rodriguez to Tolstoy? Good grief.
You think that's a stretch? You should see the English Lit. paper I wrote in the midst of an acid-induced hallucination: Gene Keady vs. Emily Dickinson: Who Would Be Happier if They Actually Got Laid?
